What gun would you use?

I'm going hunting for Coyotes & Bobcats... What gun would you recommend that I use if I wanted to save the pelts?

These are the guns I have access to...

RE: What gun would you use?

I voted 270 but you need to use a good low grain bonded bullet. If you use a 22 you may not get your pelt altogether.

RE: What gun would you use?

Don't you think I should look for a heavy bullet that would blow right through the intended target with out much expansion? What type/brand of bullet would you recommend for the .270?

Thanks!
Mike

RE: What gun would you use?

I would go for the .22 marlin semi-auto w/scope.

None of what you have listed are verygood. .22 is way too small, and your rifles are way too big. It think youronly choice would be the 12 guage with #4 buckshot (not #4 shot). Noneof the rifles should even be an option.

RE: What gun would you use?

.22 is definately the right choice. a .22 will kill any dog (yote) or cat (bob cat) around with no trouble at all. ihave killed hogs with a .22 long rifle here in central florida with no problem and they are WAY tougher than any dog or cat. .22's get bad raps from people who consistantly believe bigger is better. there has probably been more deer killed (by poachers)with a .22 than any other caliber on this continent and once again, deer are tougher than cats and dogs. the only draw back to a .22 is accuracy at the longer ranges.

This really should be a 204 or a 22/250 or a 223 or a 243 thread.

The 22 or the 12 ga will work up to 50yds or so, and you have some overlapping in your deer calbers. Is it possible to swap one for a bolt rifle in a varmint caliber? 17hmr is a maybe out to 100 yds, ZERO pelt damage.

The 270 will do it, and the 30/06 will do it. Neither are best.

Thanks for the help guys! I did go bobcat hunting last year with some success. (2 bobcats) One bobcat died instantly in it's tracks and another ran a little before dieing. I think you really have to focus on proper shot placement when hunting with a .22

I saw nothing up there for varmit hunting really. Get you a good 22 centerfire.

I pretty much use bow or Xbow for coyotes and bobcats...
if I was using a gun I would use the .22 on them...

I didn't mean to just say something off the list. but if You're serious about this... you need something that will work without much damage...and those aren't really good choices.

RE: What gun would you use?

You could always go with your .30-06 and get some 150gr FMJ bullets for it. They won't expand and in the body size of a coyote they probably won't destabilize and tumble inside the animal. The FMJ should blow right through leaving a fairly small hole going in and out. It'll kill a 'yote plenty well, and do it a lot further out than your .22's will. Another option would be to trade one of your .22's in and get yourself a Savage bolt action in 17HMR. That'll do the trick out to at least 150 yards if the wind's not blowing too hard.

I'd say out of the options you have, the 12ga is what I'd go with. They work for just about everything as long as you use the right shells.

Everything up there for fur hunters is either WAY TO MUCH gun or NOT ENOUGH GUN! 22lr is prolly the worst to sling lead at a yote with! NO RIMFIRES! Just find u a good 22 caliber centerfire! For example: 223, 220 swift, 204, 17 rem, 221 frball, 222 rem, 218 bee, maybe a 22-250 but not so much....but i voted 12 guage its the best thing up there and its still not all that good

O and if u shoot a 12 guage...be sure that u use Hevi-shot or some #4 buck

RE: What gun would you use?

i believe he said he wanted the pelt's in good condition. this is why a shotgun would not be a good choice, why would you want 20 holes in the pelt instead of 1?

RE: What gun would you use?

Cuz if u do it rite...hten the holes are iiittttyyy bbbiiitttyyy

Just out of curiousity, why would a .220 Swift be a good choice, but a .22-250 would not? The .220 Swift is about 100-200 fps faster than the .22-250 and would, with similar bullets, do more damage. If I were picking from your list the .22-250 would be my 1st choice, followed by the .223 Rem. All the others are fine in their own right, but since I doubt he handloads, they would all be harder to find factory ammo for, and selection would not be a good. Personally, my favorite cartridge of all time is the .22-250, as it's wicked deadly on everything up to (and by many accounts including, if you use it right) deer, it can easily produce top notch accuracy, and it'll reach out a little farther than the .223.

But if you recall, he's asking about which of his guns that he already has would be best suited. I suggested the .17HMR because they can be had very inexpensively compared to a CF rifle. But if he simply can't afford a new gun (which I can understand), then he'll have to work with what he has. I think the .30-06 with FMJ bullets would serve him best unless he can get them in really close, then I'd probably go with the .22 semi-auto and try for a headshot.

Thanks for all the tips! I really appreciate all the information and tips you guys are giving me! I'm all new to this predator hunting stuff. Maybe when I get enough money saved up I'll buy a .22-250 or a .17HMR...:D
