just to clarify, what big cats do live in the U.S., and surrounding areas??
as far as i know there are the mountain lion (cougar, puma etc), jaguar, florida panther, bobcat, jaguarundi.
OKCaveman, the Cougar IS the Florida Panther. A little smaller and a bit different than in the rest of the country but still a Cougar. Generally speaking, panther is a nickname given to a Cougar in this country. In other places the Jaguar or Leopardis called a Panther. In the lower 48 when you refer to a black panther you are understood to be referring to a black Cougar, which according to biologists, breeders and other experts, does not exist nor has one ever been produced by anyone.
im sorry but you are wrong on that. the florida panther is indeed a subspecies. very closely related. much like a whitetail is related to a blacktail or coues deer, but they are not in fact the same exact species

gypsybill it appears we must agree to disagree. everybody has their own opinions. maybe one day we will find out what these sightings are, if not of a large cat. i must admit though that i am enjoying this exchange. it is always nice to learn new things and to jockey ideas around

Proof, my good friend. Give me something to hang my hat on. If I am wrong I will gladly admit it, so show us some pics and documentation.

You posted quickly. I have enjoyed it also and am glad that the thread has gotten back to a friendlier tone. I am no expert in anything, (well maybe sex, religion and politics) but other than that not much. I am having fun.;)

appears we used the same resources. yes we are both right. it is a cougar subspecies. closely enough related as to be imperceptible in difference. maybe they ae just different enough though that 1 may have the melanistic gene? they are close enough to breed succesfully, but certain genes differ. could that be one of the differing genes?
