On the ground I hunt total acres around 170. Of that probably 40 or so is wooded. The rest is farm ground. There is a major river that runs though this area as well. Now if I practice only shooting mature deer, but my neigbors may not. Am I really gaining anything? I am the only one that hunts on my ground. My neigbors not sure how many hunt and acres.

I doubt you are really helping anything. A mature deer will range up to 1000 acres, depending on food, deer population and cover.

Being that your neighbors are shooting every thing that walks I am inclined to say that you are SOL. However, some deer become home bodies and don't leave a core area. If you want to shoot only mature deer by all means do it. You never know when you may pass on a yearling four point and in five years turns into a world record typical...having never left your property.

I would still pass on younger deer cuz I am 100% sure that a young buck you shoot won't grow to be mature. You let him walk and who knows...Maybe try to talk to the neighors and let them know you are passing young deer and it might catch on.

How do different areas of the country do it? Is there less hunting pressure. I know for sure hunting pressure around me is high.
