7mm Rem Mag vs. 7mm-08

I have been hunting with a 7mm Rem Mag for a lot of years now but until 2 years ago havent heard of the 7mm-08 whats the difference in these two?

7mm-08 is a great gun. it has been my go to whitetail caliber for many years. it is essentially a 308 casing which is necked down to.27 caliber bullet.

I believe that the 7mm08 Remington is one of the best, if not THE best all around gun on the market. It shoots flat and it has some good knock down power. I use this gun primarily for deer hunting, but I would not hesitate to use it on a bear. I've also used this gun coyote and groundhog hunting.

My dad uses the 7mmMag Remington and it has a heavier bullet but has tremendous knockdown power. I have never seen anything like the entrance and exit holes it puts in a deer, they are tremendous.

So, either way I believe that you cannot go wrong with either choice, in my biased opinion though, I like the 7mm08 a little better.

okcaveman,
I agree, the 7mm/08 is a fine deer caliber. It is, however, a .308 necked down to 28 caliber (.284), not 27.

The difference is it doesn't pound you and deafen you....but still does an incredible job on just about anything you want to hunt. IMO, one of the best all around cartridges out there. 7mag is fine, but overkill 95% of the time imo.

i see no need to use a 7mm Rem Mag, IMO its a little much, 7mm-08 is a great cartridge

Some may say it is a little overkill and it very well may be, BUT, I love using the 7mmMag because I know pretty much every animal thats takes one from my 7mmMag, its gonna go down.

If you shoot 140's in that 7-08 and 175's in your 7mag, the trajectory is the same. great deer round.
