Quartering to shot
I have a 7mm Rem Mag and shoot 150g Federal Power Shok. I've taken 1 deer with a broadside shot at 100 yards with this set up. Obviously no issue.
My question is, Would you take a quartering to shot with this set up under 125 yards and feel confident of a clean kill if you had to go through the shoulder? I've heard talk that maybe the speed out of the 7 mag at close range along with the power shok not being a premium bullet may create some issues Any feedback would be appreciated |
RE: Quartering to shot
I use the 165 grain Corelokt. You will not get the expansion at close ranges but you definitely put them down. I have shot them at 25 yards and they die right there. 7MM Rem Mag is an unsung cartridge. I like it just fine for anything.

RE: Quartering to shot
My biggest concern with a quartering toward shot is meat damage. You need to stay out of the hind quarters.
A 7mm should end-to-end a WV deer (I hunt there, too) without an issue. |

Thanks Pro line,
So if say you had a quartering to shot aiming at the shoulder looking to exit just behind the off shoulder you dont think the non premium bullet would have an issue banging through the shoulder and getting to the vitals? |
RE: Quartering to shot
you might lose a little meat but it wont go anywere thats for sure I have taken quite a few with my 7mm Rem Mag mostly a long way off but last year I shot a doe at about 30 yards she didnt go much farther than down the hill she slid down after she dropped.

RE: Quartering to shot
With the 7 mag if you don't hit bone at close range you might have expansion problems. With the quartering to shots, you'll more likely have meat damage, possibly ending up in the guts!

RE: Quartering to shot
Ive shot a few deer this way and have had them not go more than 10 yards. However I do agree with JagMag on the close range shots you are going to have fragment and expansion problems.
