This is a retarded post....it's the guy behind the gun that makes it "good or bad". I've shot many deer with a 270 and havent lost a deer ever. The lungs and heart are nothing but mush...what more do you want. Spend some time at the rangeand I'll bet you will find that there is nothing wrong with the gun.

Here in the area of Texas that I hunt the .270 has not been a fan favorite. I have seen a lot of deer lost with the .270 rather than any other caliber.

Does it suck? Well for me it does, and I will never buy another. The .270 was the first rifle that I bought myself when I turned 18. I had3 sour accounts with it and sold it.

The first was 75 yardbroad side shot on a mule deer buck thatbounced off as if not shot. My daddumped him with one shot at 280 yards with a 6mm. We found my bullet stuck in the shouldernext to the shoulder bone.

The second was on an Aoudad sheep. Made another perfect shoulder shot at 250 yards to see the big ram stand there as if not hit. The second shot was a little back and at least put the ram on the run. My buddy put the third and final shot in him with a 7mm-08 from over 300 yards which dropped him in step.

The third and last mishap with that gun was yet another well placed shoulder shot on a whitetail doe from 150 yards. When I shot her she jumped srtaight up in the air like she was hit good. I didn't expect her to go far. We founda good blood trail and tracked her for about 200 yards until we lost the blood. My cousin shot a doe that evening about a 1/2 mile away from my blind with a bullet under the skin where I shot the doe earlier.

So as far as the .270 goes, I would agree with the sales man. Maybe he should keep his trap shut and just sell the gun but I would've added fuel to the fire if I'd been there.

After selling it I bought a 6mm that I am in love with. I have never had an animal that I've shot run far, except a big hog.

P.S.
Dont like the 30-06 either, I am now a .308 fan.
Unless you are shooting reloads or a bullet that I've never heard of, I can't believe this is true. Ive dropped plenty of Mule deer up to 250 yds with my .270 packing 150 grain bullets. None went over 30 yards.

I primary use this gun for whitetails now. Have killed plenty of them up to 200 yards and have never had a bullet stay in the deer unless I hit a shoulder bone and had the bullet fragment a little. All have left great blood trails if they didn't drop in there tracks. These are Midwest deer as well, which are a good size bigger than most Texas deer.

I find if kind of hard to believe that you shot a deer and later that night 1/2 mile away your cousin shot the same deer. Plus you said the bullet was just under the skin?A .22 would make more impact than that. are you sure your not using a .17?

Love my Steyr-Mannlicher Model M double trigger .270. Great gun that has never failed me. That said, I suspect it is not a very good brush gun, so to speak, so I ALWAYS make sure it is a clear pathway between the bullet and the target. Probably should be that way regardless of the caliber!

Wow, my first post here, I'm a total hunting newbie (but an experienced rifleman), and I am about to call someone a dumba$$. That said, that dealer is FoS.

The 270 is an excellent, flat shooting and hard-hitting caliber. No, it wouldn't be my first choice either. I'm guessing that the dealer either: 1.) doesn't have the 700 CDL in 270 you want, so he wants to sell you something else; 2.) he just isn't a "gun-guy" (or a rifleman), he just happens to work in a gun shop; or 3.) he's blaming the cartridge for his poor past experience, and not the trigger-man. The 270 Win has been very successful on a lot of game bigger than deer.

Find another dealer. I'll pay retail in a store for wisdom and guidance. If they can't offer either, I'll move on to someone who can offer it, or strictly price-shop.

Good luck,

Griff

30-30 has probably taken more deer than any other cartridge on earth. It's plenty effective because most guys who hunt with it KNOW HOW TO GET CLOSE. As for the 270 effectiveness, there are plenty of fellas wearing bluejeans and Carhartt jackets in Montana, Colorado, and Idaho who take their fair share of mulies and elk with it. Its the hunter, not the gun. Trust me.

Stupid response from a grossly uninformed idiot

The .270 isa proven caliber - justread the writings of Jack O'Connor if youdon't believe me. I havea Ruger M77 inthis caliber and love it. It has taken a lot of deer, all one-shot kills. It isn't the most accurate caliber out there from the bench, but in the field it is a great deerrifle. As is the 30.06 and 7mm-08, which I also have and have used withgreat success.

Iconsider the .243 an "experts"rifle for whitetail. It's fine for broadsidelung shots and I've taken deer withit.Where I am concerned about it is on quartering shots where I have to get through the shoulder.

This has to be the dumbest post I have ever read in my life. The 270win is one of the best all around caliber ever made. I live in Montana and if the 270 can buck the high winds of Montana and still kill me a Bighorn sheep at 250 yards with one shot. I think the 270 is one very good Caliber.

How about a 7mm-08?

JMHO
I've also shot 2 dozen deer with a 270 and always found them. My wife has that 7mm-08 and has shot and recovered several, none lost.

I would bet that the bullet dkhammer was using was an old type of ballistic tip. I would almost guarantee it wasn't a good bonded bullet.
