30-06? were can i use it in MI?
 

never been hunting before, but i am really excited about gettin out there next year. I attained my 30-06 from my grandfather after he passed away so its a pretty old gun doesnt matter to me though i just wanna get out there early in the morning and get up in a tree weres a good place to go where my guns legal? also what am i looking for? antlers, no antlers? your all probably laughing as you read this ( this kids gonna get shot if he isnt carefull) thats why im waiting till next year so i can get alot more input on hunting. any input will be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about the rifle I think you can but I didn't look long. Here is the website for Michigan DNR. You probably want to take a hunter safety course. You can find out when on the site. You can see the season dates etc on there two.

Do some reading and shot the rifle a good bit before heading out. Take a hunters safety course they are always good. If you hunt with a gun you need hunter orange too. Don't forget that or your asking to get shot.

I think as long as you're north of Big Rapids you're good to go. Everything south is shotgun, muzzleloader or handgun only.

First off, if you've never had a hunting license before, you HAVE to take the hunters saftey, or you won't be able to get one. Secondly, the pic that Cave62 posted tells the tale. You are pretty much safe as long as your north of the thumb. As you get away from the thumb, (west) it is a little further south of the thumb, but anything north of it is safe.

First off, the best guns are guns handed down from your dad or grandpa. Fancy new guns have no soul. I have an old side by side that is not worth much, but it has been handed down since about 1895 or so when it was made. It is priceless to me! Take good care of your grandpa's gun. Your son will thank you for it.

As far as waiting to hunt goes, certainly you should learn all you can but you should get out in the woods THIS year. I am a newer hunter too and I learned the most when deer were looking me in the eyes. Nothing feels quite as cool as that, assuming they don't run away. Learning what scares them and how good they can smell will teach you more than anything you can read.

Don't worry about someone shooting you, that is silly. Just still hunt, don't stalk, if you walk around on public land you will interrupt other people hunting. Nobody really stalks in Michigan anyway. Hunters getting shot is extremely rare, but it makes great news stories so you always hear about it.

Good luck, you will love it. And get to the range with that gun. You will want to be very comfortable with it when you are hunting.

In Michigan, you HAVE to take hunters safety. This is from the DNR website:

Hunter safety is required if you you were born after January 1, 1960 and you want to purchase any Michigan hunting license.

Well yes and no. Once you are either 18 or 21 in Michigan you no longer have to take hunter safety to get a license. I never took it and I buy licensesall the time in Michigan, and I'm 26.

Its a ridiculous loophole.


If you obtain your driver's license most sportshops/walmarts will not ask for your SPORTSMAN CARD (which you may get after hunters saftey is completed). This is something Michigan reallys needs to get ahold of. Very inexperienced people are buying licenses, and yes, many people are still inexperienced after hunters saftey, but atleast it is something.


What do you do, as long as you look somewhat in age they will never ask for your sportsman card? Another Michigan blunder?!?! [:'(]
