I shot a Browning BAR shortrac 300 WSM of my friend's and the recoil is considerably less than my brother's BAR longtrac 300 WinMag and my dad'sA-bolt 300 WinMag.They aregreat calibers too, i would get 1 but i just can't giveup my BAR 308

I have a .300 Wetherby and it kicks like a mule in heat!
Although, I can shoot out to 500 yards, my longest kill to date was two does, one at 436 yards and another, at 468 yards.
I have a Nikon 4x12 scope with a Harris Bi-pod and a Boonie Packer on it.
Go with a 4x12 ... you will be glad that you did. My son has a .270 with a Nikon 3x9 scope. Even with the .270 he couldn't get enough visual and went with a less expensive 4x12.

I haven't shot the 300 WSM, but I shot my brother's 270 WSM X bolt and it had a very light recoil I thought. A lot lighter than my Remington 7600 270 Win. Then this past weekend I shot a buddy's Rem 700 270 WSM and it had comparable recoil to my 270 Win, a lot stiffer than the X-bolt. So if you can't decipher what I just said, I would imagine you will be surprised how well the butt-pad on your X-bolt works, and I don't think you will have to worry about recoil too much.
BTW I kind of had my heart set on a Rem 700 as my next deer rifle, but after shooting the X-bolt, I changed my mind.

the 300 wsm is the best cartridge i and my dad have ever owned, in fact we let our family shoot our 2 300 short mags and now every single person in our family that hunts has it

Thanks for the replies...I can't wait to get a hold of it. I have a 7 mag a bolt with the boss. If i shoot it in the field without earplugs i literally can't hear for a week. PLus the gun is so long and heavy. The 300 wsm is a lot shorter and lighter
