shoot or walk

would yall let a button buck walk by or shot it the deer i posted earlier i honestly thought it was a doe and to tell you the truth i would have been happier about a doe then a button well just wonderin what yall'd do

it would depend if it was legal and ifi had meat in the freezer. but chances are i would shoot. i like deer meat better than horns. now im like horns to so if it was with a doe id take the doe, but otherwise id be having toehead steaks for supper

You want to let it walk. You want bucks to get as big as possible, so you shouldn't shoot a button buck.

Rem,
Listen, dont let a few of the guys in here mess with you. You legally shot that deer bud! It was your first deer and you should be proud of him. I shot my first deer when I was 15 and she wasnt much to brag about either but you know what? It was my first deer kill and one I will never forget. No need for the poll, you did real good rem.

man ya'll are harsh. Remington is only 14 years of age and that was his first deer. if someone's 8 year old son or daughter killed that buck ya'll would say different. trophy's are different in each persons eyes and if it's legal...no one on here has a right to criticize him. he was only asking this question because a couple of posers thrashed him on his original thread for shooting this deer.

this sure ain't the way to encourage young hunters.

If it were my first, heck yeah i would proud regardless.....after that i would be a lil chosey, but for a first , it's fine, it's meat in the freezer and to tell ya the truth, it's more meat than i have so far...so congrats.;)
In the future if you can just let it get as close as possible, do.....bucks heads are flatter than does, they're more rounded, it may or may not help....but it's something to think about.

Early in the season I wouldn't think twice about shooting it. It will give you some meat and then look for the big boys

i agree its your first deer be proud... however now u can get a little more choosey to help not to shoot another one try not to shoot a lone anterless deer unless u look under its leg to make sure its a doe:D... so congrats but now stick to does and racks.. good luck huntin

i didnt realize it was your first deer as well. man be proud. dnt let any1 tell you thata you shoudnt be. my first was a small yearling. second was a button buck. if i kill a button buck even know( after many years and many deer) im still proud. a deer of any kind is something to be proud of. anybody who tells you differently needs to reevaluate their thought process.

Remingtonshooter1, it sounds like you are feeling a little guilty now about shooting your button buck. Don't worry about it. I promise, you are not the first hunter who has mistakenly shot a bb for a doe. I have shot a few button bucks in my earlier days. You asked if we would shoot a bb. Most of us would not, but most of us have been hunting a whole lot longer than you. This is your first deer. As long as it was legal, be proud of it. Maybe next time you can make sure it is not a bb, but if you kill another one, it's not the end of the world. Good luck and bag a big one.

In your situation as a beginner, it's blast away and be proud.

RE: shoot or walk

If your happy that's all that matters. Congrats on your first of many deer!!

Not directed at the poster or any one particular just a general comment(devil's advocate;)). How many who say pass a BB would also pass a antlered buck that is immature? Say a 3 year old 4x4?? Neither deer has reached its potential or matured, correct? If your going to preach about let em go n' let em grow you should also be passing on this situation!! Before you jump on my back please refer to my first statement, as I view it as if your happy I'm happy for you. However if you cast stones better not live in a glass house:D.

For the record or the pollI would pass the button buck and I also pass immature buck. If it means tag soup I'm fine with it b/c its my hunt and I make the rules, I wouldn't be happy with shooting an immature buck so why do it just fill a tag or say "yep got my buck"!

Personal choice that's all...it's what we make of it that counts..nothing more. We as hunters evolve, though we shouldn't expect others to be on the same page as us. Evolution could be bigger rack orit could be better meat. Nor should we forget where we started. It's the thrill of the hunt that drives us be it a buck, doe or just getting out.............IT'S ALL GOOD!!!

My first was a 55lb yearling doe that I shot when I was 22 years old. I'm not gonna say I'm proud of it, but it was my first and I wouldn't have passed it up. Here in Louisiana, unless you're on a management area and there is a bucks only season in progress, anything without spots is legal. A button buck can easily be mistaken for a doe and being your first kill, it is easy to not realize how small a deer is. Personally, now I will not shoot anything that looks like it's less than 100 lbs. By then if it is a buck you should be able to see the antlers clearly therefore avoiding shooting the button bucks

I put let it walk. But that is after taking deer consistently for awhile. When your young...and Ill get crap for saying this but when your young, if its brown its down....waiting for big deer is somehting you learnas you get older and kill more deer. I would never have passed that shot at your age either!

I'm strictly a meat hunter, and my state classes button bucks as "antlerless" deer, which we have way too many of here. Dumb deer taste just as good as smart ones, that slick goes down if I see it and it looks worth the drag out.

My first deer was a button buck so i have no problem with it, however now that I have a lot more experience and have taken a lot of game i let them walk everytime, no matter what. But for your first deer dont worry about it, its awesome.

RE: shoot or walk

I would have let it walk if I knew it was a button buck, but I have killed little bucks thinking they were does. It happens don't feel bad. I felt so bad I wouldn't even take a picture of it, now I regret it because its the only one I don't have that memory of. A deer of any size is an accomplishment to be proud of. So hold your head up even if its a button buck.

No questions man! Don't be ashamed of that button head...Everyone starts somewhere. Don't let someone else determine what is a trophy to you. Way to go!

I'll shoot a doe, not a button buck, perhaps a doe fawn, but really I only look for mature does.

RE: shoot or walk

I said shoot it. Mainly because I seen that you are 14 and it was your first deer. I'm 35 and I just started hunting last year. I was lucky enough to take my first deer with a bow this season. It was a little tiny doe. Maybe only 50 pounds is all. Now that I have a couple in the freezer I wouldn't shoot one that small again, but I don't feel bad for taking it. Even though it was a tiny little thing, it is still a trophey to me. I was so happy after hunting hard with a bow all last season and not getting anything.
Don't let some of the guys on here get to you. You now have meat in the freezer and you can be a little more picky.
Keep hunting and have fun with it!

You remember how I told you that my button buck was the one I was most proud of? I thought I'd been shooting a doe as well. Prefer the meat to the horns. I was very proud of that deer as I was 35 weeks pregnant and not only had worked 52 hours that week, but also had hunted during my spare time. Got that deer on the evening of the 6th day. I knew it was a fawn, but didn't know he was packing jewels until I got up to him. Be proud! Oh, and my first deer was a doe, so at least your first one was a buck! Now that you've got some of the first deer jitters out, you can start looking for the big ones.

Would I shoot a button buck again? Heck yeah! All themeat was so tender. I'd rather have30 lbs of fawn meat than 120 lbs of old buck.

RE: shoot or walk

I'd shoot it. I only have a small spot to hunt, pretty much just enough room for one stand. I may see 1 deer every two weeks or so. I pretty much take whatever I have a good shot at.

In fact, I got a button buck last Sunday with my muzzleloader. I'm more than happy with it.

im not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes attention to detail[X(]but if it were a choice between a button buck or a doe i would take the doe for sure but when i shot my first i had no clue he was a button buck

I'd let it walk because you never know if he could be the biggest you've ever seen. give him a chance to mature before taking him

there is no reaon at all to shoot it, unless u are realy desperate, but if u hav a button buck come on chances are u will hav a few doe come in some time, but let him mature could b the biggest buck u have ever seen some day

RE: shoot or walk

Ive passed multiple button bucks this year with my bow. Only reason is because I want them to grow. My first deer everwas a b.b. that I shot during shotgun season, (I thought it was a doe). But yea I'd definitely letthem walk if I saw the buttons. On my property I want to fix the buck to doe ratio, so all buttons live and a lot of does go in the freezer.
