How High in a Climber (and how)?
This is my first year using a climber tree stand. I've used it several times but can't seem to get any higher than about 20 feet off the ground (estimated by my pull rope).
If I put the stand on the tree about 3 feet up (to get up on the more or less straight part of the trunk) and angle the stand as much as I can, I only get up 20 feet before I'm level. Who climbs higher than 20' and how do you do it and stay level at your final height? |
RE: How High in a Climber (and how)?
Tilt it more on the ground. Ive had mine so steep on LARGE MATURE loblolly pines that it was nearly impossibly to go the first 10ft and still be in the stand. I used a 30' rope, saw, and gun rack on my tree stand. Maxed out the rope, pulled it up, put it in the rack, bungeed it down. climbed and cut limbs until I got tired of climbing or cutting. This was for hunting a cutover I had to look down into. I love it up high tho for gun hunting, bowhunting about 20ft. Ive went as high as 50' before. Nice up there, but not always practical lol.

RE: How High in a Climber (and how)?
I usually try to find a tree that is pretty consistant from bottom to where I want to end up. Obviously this isn't always the case, but just try to guesstimate how big the tree is where you want to sit and go from there. It takes some practice but you'll get the hang of it.
Remember, it isn't always important to be real high, you need to find some cover up in the trees and still have shooting lanes. Good luck! |
RE: How High in a Climber (and how)?
Well I don't have one, but just thinking, what about bringing a shim up with you? But on the other hand, when do you really need to be any higher than 20ft in a tree for bowhunting? |
RE: How High in a Climber (and how)?
25 MAYBE 30 if it is really open and I have no other choice, is as high as Ill climb bow hunting.....gun hunting when I hunt for longer periods of time during a sit, I get comfy, hunt high as I can and sway in the breeze on a cool afternoon in the sun and generally fall asleep lol

RE: How High in a Climber (and how)?
once I find the tree I like (pre-season scouting) I climb it with my climber, if by chance I'm not even I will climber back down and re-adjust, once everything is OK I climb back down, stand still around the tree, I take electric tap and wrap the chain (goes around the tree) just where the chain goes into the stand, this way everytime I hunt this tree I know for sure I will be level

RE: How High in a Climber (and how)?
never climb higher than your comfortable with. with that being said i have been as high as 40 feet in a pine. i look for tree's (mostly pines) that the diameter stays relatively close from the bottom to the top.

I think what I'm hearing, beyond what I already do, is choose trees that don't narrow down as quickly--perhaps some pines. Thanks for the help! I appreciate it.

RE: How High in a Climber (and how)?
I hunt no higher than 25 ft,that is how long my pull rope is.As for for your stand leveling out so soon, just like others have said, just tilt it more!

RE: How High in a Climber (and how)?
I'm already tilting it as much as possible for the trees I've climbed. If it were the simple, I wouldn't be asking on here.
