I've shot corlokts forever and love them. We drive deer and I have shot them at 20 yards and out to 278 yards w/ 180 grain load no problem. If this is a persistent problem for you it might be the box you got. But in my camp CL's are king.

most of my hunting will be no more than 100 yards. got rid of the 30-06 and now have a Savage 7mm Rem Mag with 150 gn core-lokts.
The 7 mag will have less penetration than the 30-06, especially under 100 yds.

That's how it starts...

Guy kills a deer, feels like he didn't have enough gun...Blames the gun, scope, bullet, barometer, weather and his girl friend...

Next thing you know, he's shooting a .358 Magnum WopperStopper...Can't hit a basketball at 50 yards with it, but everyone
knows you "Can't killl them too dead" and you of course "Need to use enough gun"...

He would have been better off keeping the gun he had and learning how to use it...

In this case, other bullet options were avaliable...Nosler Partitions are good for closer shots...150, 165 and 180gr weights are
also avaliable...

One deer doesn't tell a hunter much...I shoot 6-8 deer before I form any firm opinions on a deer bullet...

Instead of a 7mm Magmum, you would have been better off moving to a 7mm-08...It shoots the same diameter and weight bullet as
the 7mm, but at a slower velocity so you don't have the problem of a bullet fragmenting at closer ranges...

The 30-06 is one of the best deer rounds out there...There is no need for a 7mm Mag for our deer down here in NC...It causes bad habits...

Wow, I can see the sarcams dripping off that comment. Sorry to say, I have been hunting almost 30 years and pretty much know what kind of gun to use. I got rid of the '06 cause I was not happy with the way it felt and how "cheap" it seems. Needless to say, it was a Remington 710 and was given to me as a barter deal. After I sold it, I came across the 7 Mag at a very good price and thats the only reason why I bought it. Plus the fact that it is a Savage. I also use a Savage .270 to hunt with and a few slug guns including the H&R Ultra slug. Also, I will be going Elk hunting next season and feel just a bit more comfortable with the 7 Mag. So try not to criticize someones choice of gun unless ya know why they got it.

I think I will actually have more than enough penetration. Enough to come out the other side with him flinching a muscle. I am going this weekend to scout out a area in the mountains. If i find a good area that has open space, I will use the 7 Mag. If I find something thats more enclosed, I will probably use the .270 or the ultra slug

You probably hit ribwith your lung shot and had a deflection to the spine or central nervous system core. This happens quite often. My brothers, a cousin, and an uncle are nutjobs and will disect a deer until they find out the entry, theexit, and everything else in between. You'd be amazed if you saw how many times stuff like this happens. I've hit a deer with a perfect broadside shot with Nosler BT's at close range andit acted likeit wasn't even touched...due to no expansion time. Just a freak thing undercertain scenarios.
Certain guys love certain guns for whatever reasons. I hunted WI whitetails with nothing but .30-06's nearly 30 years before trying out a 7mm-08 just for Sh**s and Giggles. Love that gun too.

yeah out here in MO i take 25-500 yard shots so i use a 130 grain core lokt. work's great. even for shooting for fun at 700-800. drops the buck every single time. but i am shooting a 270.

I'll bet a dollar to a donut that 150 grain core-loks in 30-30 and 30-06 have taken more deer than any other cartridge in this country...
