Default SLUG HUNTERS: Try everything new or stick with tried & true?

Every year for quite some time now there is atleast one new sabot slug offered up with some hyped up claim or another. It's faster. Hits harder. More accurate. Better expansion.

Now if you hunt deer with a shotgun slug and wear your boots on the right feet you know any well placed foster slug will kill a deer just fine.

But do you buy into the marketing hype of these manufacturers and peel out the sawbucks?

In the early 1900s, a guy named Roosevelt Luckey, killed the longest reigning world record whitetail in NY w/ a 12ga "pumpkin ball" slug from an old SxS.

Ive killed deer w/ bow, sluggun , centerfire and muzzleloader and Ive never taken a shot farther than 45yds. Cheap old rem. sluggers and brenekes will clover leaf at 50yds from a smoothie and 440 grains of lead hits plenty hard, so I dont see much point in spending 15$ for a box of 5 sabot slugs when a 3$ box will do.

Your needs may be more demanding than mine though , I only hunt thick brush.

As prices go up, I look for cheaper options that shoot well. Switched from Win. BRI type ($12) to Brenneke KO Sabots ($8)this year. They shoot faster, and are as accurate.

I buy the remington copper sabots when thay are are sale. I have 4 boxes now and hell thay are on sale at dicks with a rebate, be back in about 30 minutes.
I try to not mess with my set up as I,m pretty comfortable with it. As for the price of the slugs I shoot, well I try not to miss...

I used to use Brenneke sabots and will be sighting in some Hornady SST's for the old 12 ga this weekend or next...stay tuned. My last Outdoor Life had a good article on slugs & sabots. Lightfields were the accuracy winner.

Been using the same Federal Primium sabots in my 870 for years. I love them 3 inch groups at 100 yards is hard to beat. But they are harder to find anymore with all the new stuff out there beingpushed so much.

I always give the new slugs a shot every year. Not so much for the hype of the new stuff but just to see if they shoot better.

Thats my 2 cents towards Uncle Matts hunting fund........
