when to grunt
It is it too early in the season to grunt? If not what type of sound do you make this time of year. short grunts, long grunts, bellows etc...?
By the way I am in NY |
RE: when to grunt

RE: when to grunt
I've had limited success with a grunt call but I can say that I never scared a deer with a grunt call. I usually grunt when it's apparent that the buck isn't going to pass anywhere near me. I onceshota nice 9-pointer that I grunted in on Oct. 10. I was using 3 short grunts in spaced sequence. I've had much better success with a bleat can.

RE: when to grunt
I grunted in a small buck last Friday. Not a shooter but he was definitely interested. I saw a larger older deer the following night working an edge and I grunted at him. He was not interested at all. He looked a couple times but just kept going on about his way. I have a buck roar call that I use during the height of the rut. It will bring in multiple bucks if you use it right.
Here's a pic of that little buck from Friday. His right side is already broken off. ![]() |
RE: when to grunt
Had a near shooter 8 point walk under me night before last. I grunted to him and he never even twitched an ear. Two more weeks fella's....:D

RE: when to grunt
I shot at a doe yesterday evening and shot right over her back (long story).. anyways she ran off blowing her head off. I blew right back at her and grunted, continued until she was gone. Less than 10 minutes later, had a buck gruntin at me thru the thicket, wasn't able to see because it got dark to quick.
I prefer now to snort wheeze and rattle. Simply do a grunt sequence then hit the wheeze twice. Wait 20-30 seconds and hit the horns HARD!! Do this every 15-20 min. now is the time bucks wil start getting pissed when other bucks are in "THEIR" area |
