Scope mount too short?

I posted awhile back about buying a Savage 111 30-06 as a package. Well I am now trying to replace the scope with something a little better and interestingly enough the mounts that came with the gun only allow the weaver style rings to be installed in one location, as it happens a location to close together for the scope I purchased to fit.

Just curious if anyone else has encountered a similar issue and might have some advice. It looks like the mounts could be reversed which would put the grooves that the rings sit in further apart on the rifle, which might work. But I am not sure if this is an acceptable fix. I could also opt for a longer scope though I would prefer to keep what I purchased.

I'd be very grateful of any advice people may have on the topic. And I'd also be curious if anyone knows if the mounts/rings that come with the gun are decent or should also be replaced. They don't seem too bad but I'm hardly an expert as this is my first rifle.

Thanks for your time!

I would opt for getting a different scope or take your gun in and have them try to fit specific mounts for your combo....good luck

get different scope rings before replacing the scope.

Thanks for the replies, I'm thinking I'll look into new mounts for starters.

I have the same setup in a 270win. I took the rings and bases off as well as the scope right after i got the gun. I ran across a set of leupold rings and bases. It's all in what you like when looking for rings and bases.

Go with a one piece mount, The many slots give you options for optics mounting. .

So what does one look for in a scope ring to know if it's quality or not? I read a lot on how quality rings are important, but aside from brand I don't really know what separates good from bad. There doesn't really seem to be much too them so I'm curious on how one can really be that much better than another.
