RE: .300 mag or .270 rem. for whitetail deer
its why the .270 was invented, for deer!
this debate should be for elk..
also my .270 shoots awesome, .300 shoots good, both have plenty of energy at 500yds for a deer, I'd use the one I know I could hit the animal with. And most likely that whitetail will be less than 100yds, so close, why waste all that extra energy.

I have both a 270 wsm and a 300 wsm .
Both will do the job with ease ,
I just bought the 270 wsm in the Browning SHORTRAC and the 300 wsm is in the Browning classic Bolt action .
I plan on using the 270 wsm more often .
If your going on a ONCE in a liftime trip I,d take the 300 wsm.,
Just my 2cents....[8D]

I use a .270. I have no issues with it. I will kill whatever I shoot at. I've never hit one and not found it, unless it was shooter error as in clipping the bottom of the belly.
Once I get out of college and start making enough money so I don't have to depend on daddy, I'll probably buy a .270 WSM. My uncle bought one last year and we all went to check it out and shoot. I fell in love with it.

300 win magis good for shots past 600yds, but are you? I use a 270 and keep my shots well under 600 yds. I only have two stands I can see past 200 yds, and none I can see past 450yds.
On the other hand, the 300would do the job. Even if the ammo costs twice as much and makes your shoulder sore every time you practice.

i agree with what others have said, a 300 mag is just too much rifle for a whitetail. between those twoi would use the 270, but truthfully you don't even need that much gun. i've always shot a 243, just seems to be the perfect caliber to me for whitetails. not too big, not too small, and more often than not the deer i shoot with it drop in their tracks. works for me
