Moon transits... correct my math if I'm wrong...

I'll have two days this fall to hunt (deer at least), and the sun/moon times for those days are:

sun-up: 7:35am

Moon up: 2:37am & 3:42am
Moon transit: 8:35 and 9:18am
Moon down: 2:22 and 2:44pm

Sun down: 5:10pm

I THINK this means that I should be sitting in a target-rich environment from shooting hours (7:05am ->) until about 9:30 or 10am... might not need to be as early into the stand this year (usually try to be there by 5:30)...

someone tell me I'm right... please!

I'm always early and stay all day, never know when that buck will show up

I'm not that dedicated!!!! I can only sit/stand in that tree for so long... then I just gotta get down and go eat breakfast...

In most cases' count on missing out on the buck of your dreams then. All things being equal, I don't care how great of a hunter some people here like to think themselves as, bottom line, it's the right place at the right time, and the more time you spend in the woods, the better chance of that happening.

I've only shot 2 bucks in my life, so I have a lot of time and opportunity ahead of me (I hope) to improve my results.

first one was a spike (4 years ago?) second one, last year, was a WIDE but still young 4x4.5... I have 3 deer to shoot this year (thankfully), so I'll probably shoot a couple of does while if the big-guy doesn't show... deer hunting isn't about BIG BUCKS for me, its about quite, solitude, nature, and maybe a little about big bucks!!!

and I should note that I can survive in our crude tree-stands for about 4 hours before I start to physically break down (although @ ~180lbs I'm at least 15lbs lighter than last year, so I might fare a bit better)... so the later I can start(maybe 6 instead of 5:30), the longer I'll be able to stay during shooting light...

If I had only two days to hunt deer for the season, I would definately hunt all day. I wouldn't care about the moon. I usually don't anyway. Moon or no moon, I'm hunting. Is your work keeping you from hunting?

work, family, the fact that it take 3.5 hours to get to the place where I hunt, etc... we hunt birds most every weekend (or try to, and we can do it much closer to home), but we only have a 9-day rifle season here anyway, and the first weekend is shot for me, so I just have the second weekend this year. in a couple more years I'll have better places nearby to hunt (developing a 40acre parcel with my dad) but for now I have to trek out to the middle of nowhere.

What a bummer, sorry. Good luck in your two days. Hope you score both days. Hunt hard .

that's the idea... 1700 acres... 6 people... can't go wrong there!

Scientific studies have shown moon transit adn /or overhead/underfoot postion of the moon is NOT correlated with above normal deer sightings or deer activity. All the scientific studes and deer activity graphs show that deer movement/activity peaks withn a couple of hours of sunrise and sunset, no matter where the moon is, or what phase it is.

You can rely on that nonsense if you want to - but you will be missng a LOT of good huting times.

transit sits right on top of sunrise anyway... so it can't hurt me this year...

Why should his hunt be any less special if a big buck doesn't come by while he is hunting? He has two days to hunt deer. He can have a great time without seeing a buck of a lifetime. Why undervalue a nice doe?

CHAZ: go back and read his post. He simply stated he intended to hunt a few hours and what were his best chances, in our opinions. I gave him my opinion. I never mentioned ' A buck of a lifetime ", nor did he say he just wanted to shoot a doe.I didn't realize that he was looking to make this hunt "special" You said it, he didn't. If you read my posts throughout the past year, you will note that I believe it doesn't require taking an animal to have a "special hunting " experience.

If he had asked, in your words, " how do I have a great time hunting ", I would have given him a much different answer.

I have at least three deer to shoot this year... I'd like one decent buck, but I'm not too worried... we're not SHORT of deer out here, thats for sure.

Lincoln Nebraska... hunt in north and central nebraska most of the time... my parents have 80 acres southeast of town about 20 miles that we are slowly developing into habitat.
