the 30-06 is more versatile UP the critter-ladder from deer... the 270, more versatile DOWN the critter ladder.

30-06 ammo is easier to find in BFE if you get stuck there (or at least easier to find with some variety)...

can't go wrong with either... you've already made the important choice and avoided 308win!!! [8D]

Both very good, flip a coin

Agreed. '06 does have greater variety of the heavier commercial loads, however.

You can't go wrong either way.Others have made all the points I would have made.I have one of each, and I use the .270 practically exclusively. They are both very light rifles and the .270 is much more pleasant to shoot. If your only intention is deer hunting I would lean toward the .270.

I would say 30-06 if you own one gun. I don't own one but I do own a .270. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the .270, in fact, it is my favorite deer rifle. If you are looking to go elk hunting or other bigger game animal then the 30-06 gives you better options for a larger round. I know that alot of people would argue that a .270 is adequate for elk but it is below my comfort level. I had an Encore for muzzleloading and ended up buying a .300 Win Mag to go elk hunting for the first time this year. If budget isn't an option, then buy them all!!!

Both are excellent, but I prefer the 30-06 because of a greater choiceof bullet weights.

Even though Ive killed a slew of deer with both Im gonna vote for the 30-06 Improved....the 270! I just like that flat shooting and lower recoil....although i prefer the 7-08 over both

I've taken 3 moose with a .270...So elk wouldn't be a problem. Mind you it is under my preference, its the only Rifle I have, and has taken 3 nice moose, and all have fallen within 100yrds of being shot, 2 didn't even make it 30 yrds. But When I have the extra cash I want to pick up a .300 Ultra mag or .338 mag.

I voted .270, because I have one, and love the caliber. Its a very flat shooting gun, and plenty of knock down power for deer. If you did think you may hunt bigger game the .06 is the better choice because of ammo selection, but for strictly deer, its a great, flat shooting Caliber, with low recoil, and very accurate.

I know they both will do the job on deer. I voted 30-06 because I have used the same one now for 16 years and it has dropped a lot of them.

I personallyhunt with a remington270 and is a very good flat shooting gun and myuncleis a diehard30-06 fan. I have shot both and prefer the 270 because it seems I am more consistent on the range with it than the 30-06 but the 30-06 has more knockdown power.
