Wanting to purchase a 20 gauge for my son and eventually my daughter. He is big enough to handle the full size gun instead of the youth version. What is a good all purpose 20 gauge? He will using it for deer hunting first. Probably a ventrib & slug barrel combo.

I think both Mossberg and Remington (Express) have combo guns that have slug and birdshot barrels. They are usually under $300 (I think).
You can always try a Youth model and then add a recoil pad later to get the longer LOP.

i'd have to go with the Maverick88/mossberg500 maverick if your looking for the the black synthetic. I love my maverick88 and my dad loves his 500 so its even. all mossberg 500 accessories fit the maverick and you can get scoped slug barrels for the 500.

If hes not going to do alot of fast wing shooting, an H&R/NEF(single shot) slug barrel and smoothie combo would be a great & economical deer ,turkey, rabbit combo. I have found that I just cant hang with slug guns anymore and use my muzzleloader in slug zones now but Ive owned a 500, an 870, an M37 and USH(nef) and the NEF was the best (and cheapest) shooter of them all.

A couple of notes, a new gun goes about 200$ and barrels are about 60 -120 $ . The barrels have to be fitted by the factory, and a rifle receiver can be fitted w/ a shotgun or muzzleloader barrel but a shotgun receiver cannot be fitted w/ a rifle barrel, so if you think you may want a centerfire barrel later, buy a centerfire 1st and fit it with shotguns barrels after.

FWIW, I only have experience with one and that is my Remington 870 express 20 gauge. I LOVE this gun.It is the gun I use for deer, turkey, rabbits and doves.A real workhorse of a gun.

Honestly, if legal, I'd go with a small caliber rifle over a 20 gauge slug gun. Much more accurate and just a deadly. Just my opinion though, take it for what it's worth.
