What caliber would you prefer?

no matter what the distance within 100 yards which caliber would you prefer?
personally i would take the 30-30 because it packs one hell of a punch all the way out to 100 yards.

RE: What caliber would you prefer?

it does? of thosefive that casting rod would probably be my 4th or 5th choice out to 100

30-06 would be #1 for me of those choices.then the30-06 would be #2. and #3 would have to be the 30-06[&:].......you can see where im headed w/ this

I voted for the 308. But that's because I have one. 30-06 would be a good choice too.

I'm a 36 fan all the way

I've killed, or seen deer killed with all of the above, My vote goes to .30-06, with the .30-30 a close second. But just my opinion. All are good for deer. what kind of animal are we talking about tho?

RE: What caliber would you prefer?

from my personal experiences, the .50 muzzle loader does more damage to a deer when hit than all of those other rounds mentioned combined.

Hey, where's the 270?......My choices in order would be 308, 30-06, 30-30, 50 cal ml and the 243 last.

RE: What caliber would you prefer?

The 30-30 would be my last choice, except maybe the muzzleloader. A .270 would be first.

RE: What caliber would you prefer?

You need an "any of them" choice because inside 100 yards I wouldn't care one way or the other.

They all will have more than enough energy at 100 yardsto kill any deer.

The difference intrajectory, from the fastest to slowest, zeroed at100 yards will be nothing. A 150 grain 30-30 will be.3" high at 75 yards and the .243 with a 100 grain bullet will be .1" high at 85 yards.

The question did not specify what game animal, or distance, or terrain, so for an all around gun, I would take the 30-06 if I had to choose only one caliber. I normally choose the caliber depending on what and where I am hunting.

Since we're in the deer hunting forum, I'm going to assume you're talking about preference for a deer hunting cartridge. Since I hunt in Texas, where the deer are not as large as in some of the corn-belt states, I voted for the .243. Plenty of pop. Virtually no recoil. Accurate. Haven't lost a deer yet, and the terminal performance (drt and/or distance traveled after shot) has been no different than when I used my .30-06.

For years I used the Ruger .270 W/ 130grs. For the last 12+ years I have been using Ruger .243 W/ 100gr Sierra Game Kings and Ruger 6.5mmSwede W/ 156gr Alaska....

RE: What caliber would you prefer?

I've used 3 of those for deer. Fairly certain the deer didn't have a preference. At 100 yards or less, I really don't prefer one over the other.

Of those cjoices, .243, no recoil, cheap ammo

30-06 hands down

I voted for the .308 'cause it's an excellent, wickedly accurate, cartridge! Besides, it kicks the snot out of my old .30-30! [8D]

I have the best of both worlds when I go hunting during firearm season....

Old Marlin .30-30 with plain iron sights: Legendary cartridge, 'nuff said. I use this ol' thing when I'm deep in the heavy brush, real thick woods, where a shot is limited to 50 yards.

Savage .308 with Bushnell 3-9x40 scope: Wickedly accurate out to 200 yards. I use this when I'm up high on a ridge overlooking an abandoned pasture, where I can reach out and drop a deer at 150-200 yards, if need be.

I use a 30.06 with scope, but a 30-30 without scope. Thats my brush gun.

Any rifle within 100 yards will kill....dead.......I voted for a 308 due to that being my favorite handling gun with chance of follow ups needed(haven't yet but it is there)!

RE: What caliber would you prefer?

@ 100 yards I'd grab the 30-06. heavy knockdown and good accuracy at moderate distances

I voted 30-06 but would have voted .270 if it had been there.

RE: What caliber would you prefer?

I voted .50 cal, too... I haven't even taken my 7mm out of the case since getting mine. I've dropped deer at 100yds with iron sights, so, I feel comfortable shooting out to 150 yds with mine; but, I do use 150gr of pellets and power-belt bullets. I figure, if the velocity isn't enough to kill one, the weight of the 285gr. bullet will at least knock it senseless for enough time for me to get up there and beat it silly with a stick.

i shoot a 300 mag

I own a 30-06 and wouldn't trade it for any other caliber. I've killed bull elk, a B&C black bear, and many whitetail with it and it's always got the job done.
