Probably my most trusted deer rifle. Last year I took this 10 pointer, he was in a dead run at about 150 yards. When I shot he did a flip end of story

I know that shot placement is paramount, but aside from that will a .243 "drop" a deer? I know that at .243 can kill a deer, but I don't want to be irresponsible and have it wander off and die because I didn't have a large enough caliber rifle. Thanks.

You shot him at 150 yards running?

come now rory, it is not up to us to criticize. Great deer for your bro by the way. I've only ever seen a few that big in the woods, and never get a good angle for a shot or anything.

RE: Will a .243 "drop" a deer quickly?

I've shot many many many many whitetails (large whitetails at that) with my 243, and out of the many many many many whitetails I've shot they've maybe all gone a combined 50 yards total. I'd say out of the deer I've shot I've dropped 97.5% in their tracks. This includes some 400+ yard shots on them as well.

I alternate between my 7mm Rem Mag (windy day gun) and my 243 (walking gun), and the terminal performance is always the same.

I use 95gr Combined Technology BTs pushed to max velocity.

Many people consider the .243 the perfect whitetail gun. Shoot 'em in the neck if you're accurate enough, and they will drop like a stone. There is a spot at the base of the neck, where it connects with the backbone, if you hit this spot the deer will not even twitch. The "high percentage" shot is going to be middle of the body just behind the front shoulder or through the front shoulder. You want to consider the exit spot to determine the aiming point. Make the bullet exit the opposite front shoulder, and you should never lose one if you hit what you are aiming at.

depends on where you hit it? you can drop them in their tracks with a 22 rimfire if you hit them between the eyes

Great buck! I have hunted all over North America, That is a great buck anywhere. I wish I could of taken one like that, at that age.

A .243 will drop a doe right in her tracks.
A .243 will drop a small 4 point fork-horn right in his tracks.
A .243 will even drop a nice 6 pointer.
.
.
.
.
.
.
But a .243 might drop a 250 lb monster 10 pointer where he stood, you'd just have to be real accurate with your shot.

What about a 220 pound 10 pointer? what will it do to that? I think I know the answer;)

I shot 2 very nice 8-Point Bucks with my .243 Browning bolt action Rifle, several nice Doe's and a couple of coyotes for good measure!I've shot the Bucks at around 60 yards away and 100 yards away, good shot placement is a must and that can be said about most any caliber Rifles. My Daughter also shot a nice Doe with her Rossi single shot .243 Rifle

Depends on shot placement, bullet, and circumstance!

lets not challenge each others ability to shoot or not shoot at running deer. It is a choice. And some people choose to and some choose not to. Doesn't mean they don't have the ability.

Is the .243 a Remington also? What is the make and model of the .243 rifle? Thank you.

The .243 was invented by Winchester, but everybody makes it now, not just Winchester, it's not like a company kept a strict copyright on who could make the guns in that cartridge, but the "Win." at the end of ".243" sticks, to give credit to the company that invented it.

You can find the .243 Win in just about every shape and configuration you can think of, single-shot, bolt-action, semi-auto, even pump, heck you can find one in full-auto!(Ok, maybe that's going a bit too far, lol)

Pick whatever one fits your budget, with money left over to buy a scope, targets, and some ammo, then go down to the range after you get the scope put on there, sight it in, and then start researching deer behavior before the season opens, go to the range again the week before season opens to get your gun more accurate, and then.......go deer hunting!!!!!!

I actually have two 243s currently, one is a Remington Model 700, the other is a Savage special run gun (medium heavy, stainless fluted). I shot all my deer with my Tikka 243, that I no longer have. I traded it off last winter after I had shot the barrel out of it. I put around 3800rds of 243 ammo down the tube in 4 years. I am thinking about buying another Tikka 243 this fall when my local dealer runs a special on them.

well i think almost everyone agrees that its a good deer rifle..and its not a women's gun or youth gun reguardless of what other people have said..everyone gets comfortable with their own caliber

RE: Will a .243 "drop" a deer quickly?

Yes if you hit them in the proper place.
I've only killed around 17 with mine and a few have dropped, but none ran more than 30-35 yds. If you hit them wewll, even a short track job should be no issue
