What to eat
I am just curious what everyone out there eats when they are outhunting? I find myself always getting hungry but never bringing any food as I am afraid the smell of the food or the sound of the wrapperto give me away. What works for you, or what have you heard?
Thanks Dave |
RE: What to eat
I can't say I'll try this to see if it works, but, I saw a show about some African Bushmen. They were asked what makes a good hunter. Their answer was hunger.
So......fast for a few days before you hunt next and let us know if it helped. |

RE: What to eat
Cliff bars, there all natural, they fill you up and they smell like soy. Although i dont think the smell thing is a concern unless your sitting up there eating BBQ and having a glass of sweet tea. I guess it would depend on how long im going out and how im hunting. Out west hunting deer and elk, i bring a ton of food. Walking up and down MTNS all day you need energy. Back east in the whitetails woods, i hardly eat if ever.

RE: What to eat
chewy bars or i take those little bags of quaker oats and just dump them in my mouth and swoosh it with some water
|
RE: What to eat
I agree with the Cliff bars...or any other protienbar (protien is very effective in combating hunger). If you are concerned with making noise with the packaging, open it at home and wrap whatever you are eatin' in a paper towel.

RE: What to eat
For an all day outing I pack:
PB&Js - natural style PB with apricot jam. Apples - deer love that smell. Granola bars - deer like that smell too. Bottled tap water in 20 oz bottles - doesn't seem to bother them and won't make me jumpy like soft drinks. |
RE: What to eat
My best sammie is a PB&J. I find the jelly and PB gives me a sugar and protein boost. I like to have one sammie, and a couple of health bars with a bottle of water.

RE: What to eat
we(refering to my dad brothers etc)bring a propane portable stove (we make sure its not lowd or that it doesnt let out odor) but we cook ramen, coffee, and hot chocolate around the back of the truck after the hunt or before the hunt and I always bring some nutterbutters, bbq sunflower seeds, cornuts, (lowd though) granola bars, and some water or coke zero I carry it in my backpack when I hunt alone or when I hunt with partner either way I need my food or my stomach will cramp
|
RE: What to eat
Either a couple apples . apple drops or a granola bar if I,m realy hungry .
Oh ya a bottle of water to . |
RE: What to eat
Bottled water, gotta stay hydrated, and granola bars, usually oats and honey flavor.
|
RE: What to eat
deer jerky, water or gatorade w. alid thta screws on (makes a good pissore' in the woods stops scent, make sure top is tight!!!) , couple pbj's, hard candy. I know people that cook in the field and shoot deer. I also know people that hunt off a campfire as wood or coal smoke doesn't seem to bother the deer? they eat all day.
|
RE: What to eat
I make me up about 10 lbs of jerky before hunting season and take a small baggie full with me when I go to the woods.
|
RE: What to eat
Imake my own jerky but discontinued bringing it into the woods. After I eat it I have dragon breath from all the garlic and onion powder. My thought is if a human can smell it a deer can certainly smell it. Like others PBJ's, apples, granola bars, pretzels and water holds me over for a full days hunt.

RE: What to eat
I just take a Bowie knife and kill a squirrel or two that are in the tree with me and then have a feast. If I'm really hungry I'll look for a raccon.
|
RE: What to eat
You can never go wrong with trail mix. Everything that's in there deer eat.
|
RE: What to eat
Jerky...in a resealable bag, an apple, granola bits (also in a bag...hate the foil wrapper on a bar noise), bottle of water (MD Amp if I'm tired or hungover)
|
RE: What to eat
Power Bar, Jerky, Peanut butter, banana, bacon and mayo sandwich, on wheat of course. Protein, Potassium, a little fat, and carbs.
|
RE: What to eat
you can eat anything you want really..jus be quiet when opening it..deer dont care about the smell..they are curious creatures anyways..they might come in close to see what it is..i've tested cologne before and had deer come in just to see what the smell is..they dont associate food with humans..or cologne..they just want to know what the smell is..one time i was takin a piss off my stand and had to bucks walk right under me lol..they also dont associate human urine with humans as ive found out..like i said they are usually just curious..but i dont recommend peein everywhere and sprayin cologne everywhere..then they might get weary..just eat if u get hungry

RE: What to eat
Dang Buck, do you skin 'em first or eat 'em whole. Seems like you be crappin' squirrel fur for a week!
|
RE: What to eat
Skin em and make ear muffs[8D]. I eat them raw of course. wouldnt be a man otherwise.
But really I usually eat something on the way out in the truck as I dont hunt all day. I do always have something to drink which often leads to me having to pee in less than ideal locations but I am still fairly successful. |
RE: What to eat
My girl is a Pastry Chef;) Her rasberry/huckleberry oatmeal bars are amazing. I also carry my Jetboil and frozen stews, soups and curries. Water, coffee, etc... Always have a PB&J with homemade preserves.
|
RE: What to eat
If Im hunting all day I just eat a decent breakfast and I usually fine all day and I take a frozen bottle of Coke with me, stays cold all day.
|
RE: What to eat
Gatorade and peanut butter cups.
|
RE: What to eat
I sometimes bring hard boiled eggs. Easy and quiet to eat , packs plenty of energy.
|
RE: What to eat
PB&J 90% of the time (Gotta be careful with the jelly though. I don't want sticky hands). Maybe a couple of granola bars or some trail mix and water. I don't like to eat too much when on stand.
|
RE: What to eat
hmm, sandwitches, candy, jerky, pop and sunflower seeds... hey its a long day! :D
|
RE: What to eat
my daughter makes me a dry {1\2 the butter} oatmeal & rasin cookie batter. I buy a bag of the trail mix at walmart that has all types of seeds, nuts, rasins, cranbeeries, other fruits, white chocolate chips..... take out the suff i dont like, like almonds bannana chips.... mixthe remainsin to the batter. roll out candy bar size portions put them into glad fold top sandwich bag, then put intothe frezer.in cold wheather they stayhard,no noise when unrapping them, lots of energy and tast gooood. And of course you have to have a crunchy PB& straberry jelly sandich and water
|
RE: What to eat
Jerky, deer or beef works real good. Keeps you occupied with chewing and is slow to digest so you won't get hungry as often. Bring some water to sip and a good book so you can stay awhile. Carbonated drinks will dehydrate you fast and make you have to pee more often.
|
RE: What to eat
GORP good ol raisins and peanuts packed in a sandwich bag. Cheap easy and doesn't get melty.
|
RE: What to eat
i usually take things that won't stink too bad... or something that smalls natural. my favorite snack is apples... deer are attracted to them. other than that, just about any snack or quick meal thats high in carbs to keep warm work for me.

RE: What to eat
We're in the woods for 12+ hours every day during buck season, the terrain is steep mountains, and it's cold. We burn a lot of calories, and I like to eat. So I pack a sub sandwich, bologna, cheese, candy bars, water, and juice. And that's after I have a big breakfast at the cabin.
And when the day is done, there's a cold one waiting for us back at the truck. |
