Default Remington 870 youth model....

Just bought a 20ga. 870 youth model for my 11 yr old. My question is, will the field barrel shoot slugs pretty good out of it out to 50-60 yardsif I put in a rifled choke tube?

If only shooting 50 yds or so, I would just try rifled slugs with an improved choke. If it doesnt group well with those then buy the rifled choke and try out some sabots.

Rifled slugs out of I/C and sabots out ofa rifled choke tube? Isn't that backwards?

Rifled slugs get shot through a smoothbore, sabots are for rifled bores. I have a Rem 870 12 gauge with the 18 in. smoothbore slug barrel. Itis an improved choke.I can get decent groups out to 75 yards with a red dot.

I'm sure that rifled slugs/improved cylinderchokewill do just fine at that range, maybe even a little better. The rifled slugsare much less expensive too.

One of the biggest limiting factors to accuracy withthis set-upis the sighting system. That front bead covers a lot of target at 50 yds, and with no rear sight it's easy to sight inconsistently.

I recommendtrying the iron sights that clamp/screw onto the rib of the barrel. They are not expensive and places like Cabela's sell them.
