Spears?
In the crossbow discussion smokepoledoug said that is his state offered spear hunting he would try it. Well Alabama offers a 107 day spear hunting season (also regular bow season). Although I have no desire to try it, what is the rest of the forums opinion of spear hunting?

RE: Spears?
Wow! I thought starting out with a recurve was bad enough.I don't know if I could go back to that.Plus being an old fart,I don't
think I could throw it hard enough. |
RE: Spears?
Timbercruiser do they allow you to use a spear thrower? If they did I would love to try that.

RE: Spears?
That'd be neat. That takes me back to my college days and throwing the javelin. I still got a pretty good arm.

RE: Spears?
Are there restrictions on the length of the spear? The weight of the spear?
Does it have to be wood or can it be carbon or metal? Can it have a weighted front end or must the weight be uninformly distributed over the entire length of the shaft? Do I have to wear blaze orange if I use a spear? What happens if I don't get a complete pass through on the deer? Should I switch to a different spear design or just go to a heavier spear weight? How much do spears generally cost and where can I get one? Are self-made spears legal or do I have to buy a manufacturer's spears? Are fiber optics allowed to be placed on the spear for low light conditions so I can see where I threw the spear? I think spear hunters should have a separate season all to themselves. Sorry guys, but I just had to vent...... |
RE: Spears?
I saw a video a while back and the guy hunting did not throw the spear he let the animal, hog and deer get right under the tree and he jabbed the animal and it ran off about thirty yards and died. The end of this thing was like a pitch fork. Is that what you all are talking about or is it actually throwing the spear?

RE: Spears?
The only regulations I see in the Al. Hunting and Fishing Digest say the spear must be hand thrown and must have a sharpened blade with a minimum width of 2 inches.

RE: Spears?
Ya know if you had about a 10 foot spear and just run it about halfway through the vitals he would get caught by any brush or trees in the area which would allow you to put him in a head lock and finish him off with a knife! Or you could do like the whalers used to do and tie a rope to the end of it and tie the other end around your waist!!! Shoot you could have him pull you skiing if there was snow on the ground!!!!! I think it would be really neat to tie a set of antlers on your head and go for it with them, manoamano!!!
