what's your opinion? If you've used them before post the story

RE: Are .410 slugs enough for deer?
I took my first buck ever, monster cigarette spike buck, with a 410 single shot. The answer is yes however that's all I had at the time, given a choice I would recommend 20 guageminimum

you might as well use a twenty gauge

I can tell you 410 ammo is not the cheapest and I haven't priced out 410's lately but I can't imagine they are much different in price, if you have one and can't buy something else then whatever it takes, by all means get them out shooting the 410, jsut be aware it has limited range I would say 50 yards and under to be comfortable, it will get the job done if a good shot is taken.

Not legal here in Illinois.

IMO a .410 is not a deer gun. Of course, deer can be killed with one. If the question was "Should I buy a .410 for deer hunting?" the answer is no.
If a person is limited to a .410, then I'd say limit the range to bowhunting ranges, like 40 yds and under, and take only broadside to quartering away shots at the heart/lung area. I will shoot deer in the neck (I don't generally take a head shot), but wouldn't recommend it with a .410. |
RE: Are .410 slugs enough for deer?
ok, i just thought of this i dont know if i am dumb or somthing, but a .410 compared to a rifle is usually around the same size, now i know that the rifle has alot more fps which with the size the bullet will give it more KE, but the way i think IS SHOT PLACEMENT SHOT PLACEMENT SHOT PLACEMENT that is what is the most important thing, with a bow does speed kill nope, but a good shot does, so i would say that about 50 yards is the max distance, but alot of times shots are with in that distance unless your our west or something, but i have always wondered the same thing about my .410, i just have never bought slugs for it but i am gonna and try it out, maybe this season or the next.

thats true that never crossed my mind u need to check your local laws, you can find a cheap 20 gauge fairly easy

RE: Are .410 slugs enough for deer?
I agree you can bag a deer with .410 if your shot is placed properly. However it wouldn't be my first choice i have taken a deer with 22 mag before a neck shot dropped right on the spot. Here on post you have to use a .20 gauge or bigger with a rifled deer slug, if you gonna hunt with shotgun. For sure check your local laws.
