good pistol for whitetails
looking for one good out to 100-130yds it will have a scope
ive been looking at the taurus 454 or the s&w 460 ive heard the 454 was good out to about 100-110 but i heard the 460 with a scope is accurate to about 200 " just what i heard"
theres a big difference in price, i wouldnt mind paying the extra if the 460 shoots that much further, just looking for input from others thanks

RE: good pistol for whitetails
Ive got a Ruger Super Redhawk, 44mag, 7.5" barrel with a 2x Leupold on it. I LOVE IT..... I thought about going up to a 454 or 460....and a longer barrel, but then thought well, IMHO, and not right or wrong, but thats about as much pistol as I want. Anything more just doesnt seem as sporty, as for me, it would require a MUCH better rest to shoot from to be somewhat accurate, and I kind of like the limitations a 7.5" barrel and 44mag leave me with.

I have the Ruger Super Redhawk, in .480 Ruger w/ 7.5" barrel.
The .460 is a unbelievably flat shooting round .... and yes, it is goo to 200 yards .... if you are accurate enough to shoot that far ..... not an easy task ...... There is also the .500 S & W, but the .460 is a better round and has less recoil .... My .480 is good to 150 yards ... if I am.... but I tell ya, it ain't no walk in the park..... but it is fun.....
The .454 Casull is not necessary .... a lot of kick, but only marginally better than my .480 ..... If I was looking, I would decided what I was wanting from the cartridge ..... then see what fits it between the .44 mag, the .480 Ruger, and the .460... then buy it , cause they are not dropping in price, ya know.

its tougher than bow hunting in my opinion.....then again, most of the stands I hunt out of are condusive to bow hunting, not gun hunting, and Lord knows I cant hold a pistol as steady as a bow

My fav. is the Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Mag in w/ 10.5 in barrel. I've killed deer out to 75 yards with no scope. I wouldn't hesitate to take a deer out to 130yds with a scope, after that it's more about how accurately you can shoot(solid rest, scope, accuracy) than the difference between a .44, .480, or .460 in my opinion.

If you are experienced with big bore handguns, I 'd think the .460! If not, the .44 Mag. would be a good choice, its not as flat of a shooter. But then it doesn't have the recoil of a .460 or .500, which will be a factor if you are not used to it!
Personally, its .44 Mag. Ruger Super Redhawk for me!
