RE: Whats your deer rifle?
I have 2 deer rifles...One, a .54 caliber flintlock that I built in the 80s, based on what could have been made here in the Piedmont of NC in 1770...I mold my own round balls and have killed about 25-30 deer with her...Previous to that, my flintlock was a .45 custom made rifle from the late Bob Watts...
The other is my .243, it's the only center fire I own...I bought it in 1980, have free floated the barrel, pillar bedded, set the trigger at 2 1/2 pounds...
I shot out the barrel after 20 years or so, had a Shilen 24 inch installed...Replaced the Bushnell ScopeChief scope with a Leupold 3x9x40 VX-II...A few years back I had the scope returned and had the Heavy Duty cross hairs installed, they really help for low light shooting...I guess it's a decent deer rifle, I've killed over 150 with it, and a boat load of crows, groundhogs, coyotes, 5 black bears, foxes and other varmits...

I use a savage 110 model C in 30-06 or a marlin 336 in 35 remington if in the brush. I did purchase another rifle recently a T3 Tikka in 30-06. Great cartridge from deer to elk to black bear with this caliber.

Up close, in the brush and thick heavy woods: My old Marlin 30AS .30-30 with plain iron sights.
Longer shots, up on ridgetops, up in a treestand overlooking a field: My Savage 110 in .308 w/ 3-9x40 scope.
