If it's that bad, if you don't get some sunlight in there you are just about wasting your time and money. Get a limbing saw and a ladder and open it up some..

whatever works with your climate, soil type, sunlight/water, etc.

Winter Wheat, Rye, Oats, Triticale are the common fall plantings around here.

I'm with Wis....find out what best suits your climate and soil type, the rest can be figured out easily enough.

RE: Food Plot Help....
Try a mixture of brassicas, clover, wheat and turnips.....the brassicas and turnips will do good in the fall, the wheat should last all winter and the clover may take hold and last for several years. Then you can move the food plot over a few feet/yards after a year or 2 if the clover does well and make another food plot.I've also frost seeded the Whitetail Institute clover, the Pennington Clover Trioand Red Clover in the early spring and it has done really well along the field edges, logging roadsand tree lines along the open fields!
We are planting several Food Plots this weekend and we are planting 1/2 of the larger food plots in wheat then the other 1/2 I have several types of seeds to mix in to see what works the best!I have 5 lbs of purple top turnips seeds,2 lbs of Cow Peas,16 lbs of Secret Spot,5 lbs of Hot Spot,5 lbs of Thro & Gro,5 lbs of Shot Plot and 20 lbs of Green Patch Plus.Lots of Rape Seed in there, brassicas, all types of clovers, wheat and oats and several other types of seeds. |

Try this. You are planting 1/4 acre, right?
Mow it down as low as you can as soon as you can. Wait a week or so. Spray it with Round-Up to eliminate the weed competition. When you mow, see if you can get a sample for a soil test. If not, consider the soil acidic. A week or so after spraying, add 250# of pelletized lime and 100# of 8.8.8. Disk or till this in. If you have no tractor-disk set, but can get your hands on a roto-tiller, you might be able to get the seed bed done nicely anyway. Check with your Ag extension agent for the best game food plot seed for your area. If you don't care to go through that much trouble, try a winter mix of oats, wheat, rye (not rye grass) and Austrian winter pea. A decent , no brainer mix is oats and wheat 50-50. Nothing wrong with a hand full of turmnips and a clover that will survive your area. You might be just as well off with a bag "commercial" deer blend rather than making up your own. Just be certain it is for your area. Not all blends do well every where. For example down this far south you can forget northern varieties of Alfalfa making it. With only 1/4 acre you're talking about no more than 15# - 25#. Drag the seed in. Don't bury it too deeply. You can spread the turnip and clover seed on top after dragging the other seed in. Mix it with sand to make it easier to spread evenly. If you drag it again, be sure to do so lightly. These tiny seeds need be buried only a small fraction of an inch, under 1/4" , to germinate and grow well. Then hope you get rain when it is needed ! |
