Best Slug for Mossberg 500 Rifled Barrel
 

I'm looking for some opinions on the best hunting slug to use with my 12 gauge Mossberg 500 rifled barrel. I will be hunting mostly heavily wooded areas with shots in the 30 to 50 yard range. However, I may have some opportunities in some 100 - 150 yard open areas as well. I'm interested in a slug that will deliver 2 inch groups at a maximum range of 150 yards and that will drop the deer in it's tracks as well. So what's my slug?

My dad's Mossberg 500 shoos the Hornady SST's really well. The remingtom copper sabots were all over the map.

i have the same gun it is a great gun i have always used remington copper sabot slugs

Thanks for you feedback guys! I'm definitely going to give the Winchester X BRI's a try. I've been reading a lot about the Hornady SST's, but I'm hearing some guys complain that although they shoot straight, they don't have much knock-down power. A few guys have mentioned loosing deer due to that issue. Also, mossberghunter93, I'm concerned with the copper slugs splintering on compact. I've never hunting with an all copper projectile, but I hear a lot of guys say that that is a problem with pure coppers. What do you guys have to say about those issues?

I shoot the sst's although i havent shot a deer with em yet, i havnt heard anything yet like that about losing a deer.

NOTHING BUT LIGHTFIELDS! i bought a box of lightfields the day after i bought my 500 20 ga and sighted it in with 5 shots, and at 50 yards put 3 touching in the 10x ring

Lightfields, All My 500's (3) love them.

1) You are not trying to "knock the deer over", The idea is to hit it in the vitals, and the soft lead lightfield slug will transfer all or
most of it's energy into the body cavity, making the organs rupture from the energy transfer.
Never had one go more than about 30 yards after a Lightfield hits it, over 50% just drop on the spot.

2) My ratty old mossbergs grouped 2.5" at 100 yds (bench rest), but 150 yds is the stuff of "folk lore"

BRIs always worked great for me in the 500 -

I switched to an Ithaca rifled barrel and used Lightfields the last few years with great results.
I don't think its the "gun" so much - as finding the right brand that shoots well in it.

My farthest shot was 110 yards - and honestly I missed the 1st shot (held on the back - shot over it) Luckily - the deer never ran - second shot with BRIs hit basically where I aimed.
