Opinions on rangefinders?
I'm looking for a rangefinder on a budget and don't know what i need. I like the Nikon archers choice but it only goes to 100 yds and won't help much when I pick up a rifle. I bow hunt more often than rifle hunt, do I need the ID technology, or will the rifle hunter 550 work for me, or should I spend the money on the Bushnell scout 1000 w/arc? Or do I really need the arc or id technology?:(

RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
You don't need the arc technology...It doesn't make that much difference on game animals...
I bought the Nikon 600 a few years ago and it has served me well for bow and gun hunting... |
RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
For the height of most treestands, and the distance of most shots, the new technology is not necessary. I bought a Nikon 440 and I have used it for three years and it has been great. Some folks get a rangefinder that will range 1000 yards, but I'm not sure why... but the 440 yards mine ranges is about all I need. But you can get anything you want, depending on how much or how little $$$ you want to spend. That is the main issue to decide.... and we cannot help you with that. If you say you only have 200.00, then you are not going to get the new technology, even if you did want it. But the 440 can be had for under or right at 200.00.

RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
The nikon riflehunter has the same features as the Archers Choice model, just $20-$30 more and will go to 550 yds. The neoprene case is also available to fit it. BTW I've got a nikon laser 400 (the small rectangular one) I'd sell for $150 shipped. PM me if interested

RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
i think i saw that in gander mountain flyer for 150.00 also

RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
I paid about $400 when it came out, so I'd like to not give it away. Normally in Cabelas, now they are about $200 not on sale. I'd do $130.

MET You can't beat this unit for the price. I paid $199.99 for mine three years ago, but I think Cabela's now sells them for $179.99.;) |

RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
I have the bushnell scout with ARC. I do a lot of varmint hunting also and some long range shots. I love it but it was a little pricey. The built in compensater is nice.

RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
I have had the Bushnell 400 Yards or Metersfor 12+years and works fine for me..

RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
Man, you don't need anything too fancy, they are handy to have but knowing your equipment is a main focus IMO. With that being said, I still have the first one I ever bought and I think it is the first one that bushnell come out with, it is bigger than my 10X42 bino's and it gets the job done. If I were to be stalking I would upgrade to a smaller pair butmine get the job done in a still hunting situation....I don't get to do too much stalking other than some hogs....

RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
I also have one of the original Bushnell units. It has worked just fine.

RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
I started with the Bushnell Scout. It can range a deer out to 200, trees to 400, and reflective objects slightly further. It served me well when I first started hunting. I paid about $200.
I've since upgraded to a Leupold RXII with TBR (True Ballistics Range). It is awesome for bow hunting from a tree stand and hunting (rifle) inthe Colorado Rockies, especially on steep angled shots greater than 250 yards. The basic rangefinder will be fine. The angle technology just takes the guess work out of it. |
RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
I like my Bushnell Scout 1000. $200 at walmart.com. Bushnell has a $50 mail in rebate for this model.

[/align]Product Name: Buckmaster Laser 600, Realtree Camo Product ID:Nik8355 Manufacturer:Nikon Price:$199.00 It is like the 440, but with a longer range. It also has a 6X magnification instead of a 8X mag. MET |
RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
Nikon 440 works great for me. I tried the Bushnell but had problems with it reading much past 100 yds. Picked up the Nikon and never looked back. I love it.

RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
I had an old Nikon Yardage Pro. It worked great from about 7:30Am to 4:30Pm but in the first morning light and last light at night it was not dependable. So lastyear I bought the Bushnell 1500 Arc model. I live in PA but travel out west to hunt and judging yarage out there is tough without the rangefinder for me. This thing works reliably in low light conditions. I went with the 1500 because as RR said, the effective range on deer size animals is about 1/2 the published range if you read the fine print. Their max ranges are tested with a reflective white test board, i.e. ideal conditions. We all know how many white deer are out there. Good luck on your purchase!

RE: Opinions on rangefinders?
Nikon 440 works for me, but most shots I take are in close.
