What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?

RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
Please save a little more money and get a better quality scope. I had a Simmons Whitetail Classic scope a few years ago, hunted with it a few times, and sold it to a guy for $25, and felt sorry for him.......

RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
I prefer...Leupolds...:D
About 8 years ago I was hunting a cut corn field from a ground blind with a buddy...We had the decoy out and were grunting and rattling, just having a grand time... Well, the buck showed...About20 minutes after sundown, the only problem was, he couldn't see the 8 pointer through his scope that had stepped out of the woods about 125 yards away...I handed him my rifle and said, go ahead, take the shot...He was stunned when he could clearly see the deer through my Leupold... Well, he suprised me...He handed my rifle back and said, you kill him...I'm left handed and you are right handed, better not take the chance that your gun is sighted in for me... Within a week, his gun had a Leupold...:D |
RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
I personally would not get that Simmons. It is a cheaper scope, that is not the quality one might think it is. I too would opt for something a bit better...
for instance.... ProStaff 3-9x40, Nikoplex, Matte $133.00 More Info Buckmaster 4.5-14x40, SF, Nikoplex, Matte $269.00 More Info 200160 Burris 3-9x40 Fullfield II Rifle Scope [ul][*]Gloss[*]Plex[*]1"[*]Hunter Knobs [/ul] SWFA: $189.95 89717 Pentax 4-16x50 Gameseeker Rifle Scope [ul][*]Matte[*]Precision Plex[*]1" [/ul] SWFA: $114.95 Not a big fan of the Pentax Gameseeker, but I would take it over a cheap Simmons anyday. CRF04P New Vortex 4-12x40 Crossfire Rifle Scope [ul][*]Matte[*]V-Plex[*]1" [/ul] SWFA: $119.95 I have not used the Vortex, but I have heard some good things about them. There are others out there, so I would look at these ( linked above ) and look around the sites to see if you can find something you like better or that would serve you better. MET |
RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
I don't understand the question, you only listed one scope?
What are going to use it for? Plinking on a .22/.17 or varmint hunting on a centerfire, or deer hunting. If it's for a .22 it will be ok, but you could get better. If it's for varmint hunting I would save some money and get something better. A scope with those features and magnification for $100 isn't a very good bargain in my opinion, just a cheap scope. A decent scope with those specs is going to be in the $300 to $400 range and good scope is going to be closer to $600. In order to get the price down that low they had to cut corners somewhere, and it will be in the optics and quality control. just go to a store and pick two 20 power scopes, turn them all the way up and look at something far away. Pick one cheap scope and the other a quality scope in the 250-300 dollar range. If you don't see a difference in optical quality you should see about getting your eyes checked;). Now if you are talking about putting that on a deer gun, that is waaay too much scope unless you are shooting them at 600 yards or something, and then you will need a much better scope. For deer look at scope closer to 2-7x32 or 40 or the old stand by 3-9. Even a fixed power 2.5 or 4 power will work well if your not shooting very far. The lower magnification will let the scope seem brigther and more clear, plus keep price down. You can get some pretty decent low power variable hunting scopes for 100-200 dollars. Skip all the bells and whistles like illumated reticles, Ranging reticles and parallax adjustment. You don't need them and they will either increase the price or decrease the quality. Worry more about optics and coatings. For a liitle more money you could get a Nikon Pro Staff or Bushnell Legend in 2-7 power and it would be a MUCH better scope optics wise. Jump up to the $200 dollar mark and there are many more options that are really good scopes as long as you keep the power and objective lens conservative. You really owe it to yourself to go to a store that has lots of stock and look through some different scopes. I would never buy a scope mail order unless it is a model I have already owned, and then I would still really like to look through it first. I have a mueller I am pretty happy with as well, they make a decent scope for a decent price. I got mine at Gander Mountain. Paul |
RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
If you want a Simmons, get the Aetec 4-14x44. It will be around $200.00. If it is for a .22, then you don't need to spend very much to do the job. As I have said many times, you don't need a $600 plus scope to get the job done. What scope do ya'll like better? I also didn't see two scopes you were comparing.

RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
If you do get a Bushnell, get one from the Elite series. If you choose a Simmons, get the Aetec or the 44 Mag.

RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
I just noticed that I forgot to post what my buddy had on his rifle the night he missed out on that
8 pointer I shot...Simmons Aetec... If I planned to go with something around $200...It would be the Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40... You do not need more than 9 power to hunt whitetails... |
RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
Could it have been human error and not the scope? The Nikon prostaff is no better than a Simmons Aetec.
|
RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
Another thing about the Simmons scopes is that they were/are part of the Meade line. When the name was purchased it was going to the their bottom line. I don't know who owns it now.

RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
![]() .22 Rimfire 3-9x32 with Rings Item Number: BSN 762239 $55.95IN STOCK I have this on my .22 magnumMy first choice is Leupolds but I don't have enaugh $$ for one of them.Maybe later on. |
RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
I'm not saying Simmons is the greatest scope you can buy by any means. He was talking about buying a lower end Simmons. I was just telling him if he did buy a Simmons, at leastget the top of the line, which is the Aetec. He obviously doesn't want to spend hundreds of dollars for a scope, and he doesn't need to.

RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
When I first started hunting (20 years ago)I had 2 Bushnell scopes break on me so I went to the Simmons 44mag and never had a problem. I sold the gun and scope and bought a Nikon Monarch and a Luepold VXIII and I learned the true meaning of light gathering quality scopes.......The Nikon Bushmaster is $229 and its a great scope. I know this is more than the Simmons but will pay itself off when the BIG BOY walks out at dusk.

RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
you get what you pay for why would they call a 6.5 to 20 power scope a whitetail series? simmons is junk save some cash and get a leupold
|
RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
i've been shooting Pentax scopes with no complaints
|
RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
In your stated price range, I'd be looking at the Nikon Buckmasters. Better yet, save a little more and get a Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9 X 40 for about $250.00.

RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
I like the Bushnell 3200 series scopes best of all the ones I have tried and I have tried most all of them.
|
RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
I liked the older Aetecs, but don't care much for the newer ones. To be perfectly honest at this point I would get a BSA before a Simmons. Not a real cheap one, but maybe a Catseye or a Panther. I have owned a Catseye and have a few friends that have them and they work fine.
Like I said before, you just can't get that much scope for that kind of money and expect it to be great. I didn't check all your links but I'm assuming the Bushnells you listed are are from the trophy series? I think that is the only line with the Circle X reticle. I have owned a few and they are ok for the money. I didn't have one fail on me though. I let someone shoot my slug gun and they got hit in the head with the scope. After that it wouldn't hold parallax any more from shot to shot. And before you get a Circle X take a look through one to see what you think of the reticle design, its different from most other scopes. I wouldn't have a problem getting a Legend or Dusk to Dawn either if money was tight. Cabela's scopes are not bad for the price either and they have really customer service with a leberal return policy if you were to not like it. Paul |
RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
Lets change the subject to------> Whats a good low light scope ?
Say around $ 150.00 to $200.00 Closer to $125.00 or so. If there is one if not its saving time ![]() Or a someday scope. Or a Christmas pressent from some one. Most likely to happen. I could hope for.Any one have a good used 3x9x40 Leupold they want to part with ? Thank You |
RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
Jrbsr, some of the guys say Simmons is a piece of crap. That is not so, at least not the Aetec. I have a 3.8-12x44 Aetec I'm willing to part with if you are interested, at no cost. There is nothing wrong with it other than a slight dent in the AO, which didn't affect it whatsoever. I've killed many deer with this scope on my gun and never had a problem with it. It's really not a bad scope at all. A new one would cost you over $200 plus tax. This one is not the new master series. If you are interested, let me know.

I own 2 of them ( Aetecs ) it's the newer Masters Series , put out by Meade that are not very good. BUT I made a couple of calls today and was told that Bushnell bought the Simmons line from Meade Recently, and they are now maunfacturing the Simmons Scope line......... Just a bit of info I thought you might like to know.... And it's real nice of you to offer that scope....;) God Bless MET |
RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
On a side note an Aetec of that magnification is not going to be a great low light performer unless you keep the power all the way down.
If you don't get this guys scope, which is a pretty good deal considering it is free;) and the older Aetecs were pretty nice actually I would go with a lower power scope within that price range. Maybe a 2-7X32 or 40. Dusk to Dawns are decent low light performers for the money. Paul |
RE: What Scope Do Yall Like Better ?
I have owned - Nikons - Leupolds- Burrises- Simmons- Bushnells- and so on But Two of the best scopes I have ever owned is the Bushnell Banner Dusk&dawn and a BSA Catseye , super in low light , very clear scopes and no fogging up. Any more I just Refuse to pay the high dollors for a scope , and will not spend more on a scope than I have in my gun. But that is just me.
