Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
After alot of thought and thinking of hunting oppurtunities that may come up; Lats night I got myself a CVA Optima Elite Combo, 2bbls One .50cal Muzzleloader and the other in .270. Now Im lookin at scope options for both barrels with out breakin the bank, I still have another rifle I need to buy for the lil woman. .50 cal scope?? .270 scope?? Thanks |
RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
well with a 50 cal muzzleloader, im assuming its an inline, maximum range is not far enough to rule out the good ol' bushnell 7 power scope

RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
but if you are using the muzzleloaders with the open hammer and whatnot, max range is drastically decreased, and in that case, i like peep sights...its all in what you prefer

RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
Best value in a very nice scope is the Bushnell 4200 Elite 3x9x40 with Rainguard, you can still find for about $250.

RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
What Timber said. That's a very good scope at a great price.

RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
You should buy a scope of equal value to the gun or up to twice the price. Good optics will give you that last shot at the last minute. It blows my mind to see a 700 dollar rifle with an 80 dollar scope. When you think of the thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars you invest in making ONE shot to connect on a hunt, be it elk, moose or a hog. Optics are MORE important than caliber, grain of bullet, or how pretty the damn wood is.
Buy a GOOD scope. |
RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
i just put a nikon prostaff on my omega so far i really like it.

RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
Buckmaster 3-9x40, Nikoplex, Matte $184.00 Buy 2 of these.... I own several ( in larger magnifications ) and they are great. You cant beat the price.... and the above is a clickable link. MET |
RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
Yea, it really depends what you want. For the price and effective range of the 50/270, that looks like a good scope choice. As step up, I think the Zeiss Conquest 3-9 rarely has a complaint.

RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
The burris scopes are great for the money, and have been tough as nails for me so far. The ballistic plex recticle really helps with the longer shots with a little practice. If you can afford their higher end black diamond and euro diamond they are hard to beat, but the fullfiields will work well also.

RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
For the muzzle loader barrel I say the Thompson Center Omega, and for the 270 the Elite 4200 is an excellent choice. I prefer the Leupold's for the eye relief myself. Depends more on your budget. For less than the 4200 you can get a Buckmaster. The Buckmaster and the Omega are made by Nikon.

RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
I agree with the comment to spend as much on glass as the rifle it self. I don't know anything about muzzleloaders, but for the .270 I'd highly recommend the Zeiss Conquest 3x10 x 44.

RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
A Leupold Rifleman, or a Nikon Buckmaster should serve you well. On my 30-06 I have a Leupold Rifleman 3x9x50, but honestly it is a little bit overkill. If I were to do it over again I would go with the same scope in a 3x9x40.
There is no way that I could agree with spending as much as or twice as much fora scope asyou do fora firearm. There are plenty of quality scopes out nowadays that will allow you to see well in low light conditions forclose tohalf....maybe slightly more than half....the cost of a quality firearm. |
RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
Hurricanespg - I agree, there are some mid range scopes that work well. But once you'veshot a deer a dusk with a high quality Leupold (not rifleman), Zeiss, or Swarovski its very difficult to go back.

RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
a11en; Did not mean to sound like I was dissing the higher quality scopes, but to be honest I just don'tthink you need them. If you want to get one that is perfectly fine, but do you really need to spend $700-$1400 on a scope to get a good one? Heck I have shot coyotes at night (3/4 moon) using the Leupold Rifleman 3x9x50, how much clearer does it need to be?

RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
i would go with the buckmaster from nikon great scopes and even a better price i own 3 of them

RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
With the scopes today mid price scopes are good. But when you consider the money, time, and effort you put into this then is it worth it to not be able to take the shot. I have Leup, Nikon, Swar, and a few others but i go to my Trijicon bar none. 56mm bell, 30mm tube, Swar glass. It allowed me to shoot a coyote in starlight only. I am just saying how many times have you heard someone say "I saw a monster but it was just a bit to dark to shoot".

RE: Scopes: Quality/Good Price???
One thing is for sure, you'll get no shortage of opinions. What you need to do is go to someplace that carries a good selection of optics and look through them. Then you can compare price to quality. I agree with what some have said about a price point, once you get above $3-400 the return in optical quality diminishes for the money being spent. Sure I think we all would like to be able to afford a Zeiss or Swarovski. The plain and simple truth is that the budget often time says Nikon or Burris. That being said on my guns from the high end working down I have VXII's, Vari x II's, Elite's, BuckMasters and even a Bushnell Banner ( my first scope purchase), Still works fine, is it as clear as the other's not quite but it gets the job done and it is on my loaner gun.
