the perfect weight for a 308 bullet is 165 grains (exception is x bullets) this has the best ballistic coefficient for a 30 caliber bullet. bigger the bullet the slower the twist i believe.

why would you want a .308 for varmit hunting when there are lots of .22 and .243's to hunt with. the 22.50 and .204 ruger make fantastic varmit calibers.

I purchased this gun earlier this year and topped it with a burris 4x16x44 mm signiature sellect scope.

Not becauseI wanted it for varmnint hunting, but because I wanted a .308 with a bull barrell.
The .308 700 varmint comes with a26" bull barrell, neat stock with a flattened fore stock, drop floor plate (no clip).

To dateI have tried-
Federal Fusion 150 gr.= no go.
Winchester supreme BT 150= no go.
Remington Corelokt 150- Go. (last time out right under 1" with 3 shots).

Funny thing is I broker the barrell in with the "cheaper" Core Lokts and things were going well. When I switched to the higher end bullets (they cost more anyways) the groups suffered. I went back to cheap and my groups shrunk once again.

If I had more time and ammo money I'd step up to the 165's to see what they do. But season is closing in too fast to be playing at the gun range.

RE: .308

The .308 is a great round, and yes, shooting Hornady light mag ammo helps it . ( I shoot the light mag ammo too ) but it is not fully equal to a .300 mag . To get close to that, you would have to have a 30.06 with light mag ammo. or a 7mm mag with light mag ammo.

But the 1 in 12 rate will do great with a 150 gr. and even better with a 165 gr. But if the 165 gr. is unnecessary, then you will get all the accuracy you need from the 150 gr.

The .308 is an inherently accurate gun. My .308 is the most accurate gun I own, and I own a lot of guns. Mine is a Ruger M77 Mark II stainless / synthetic .308. It has a 5-20 x 44 Nikon Monarch SF scope on it , and it is da bomb..... It is a fine short or long range gun combo.

Well, I hope and pray that my ramblings have not confused you. But the .308 is good enough to take most North American game cleanly..... that has to count for something.

Federal Match King BTHP 168 gr = Top of the line round for your 308 & that's the bottom line!
