Favorite .30-06 deer/hog load?
Just wondering what your favorite .30-06 bullet type/weight was for whitetail/hogs.
My shots will be average range....nothing past 250 yards. Any input would be appreciated |

For deer I usually shoot 180 gr ballistic silvertips. For hogs I would go with a standard construction or bonded bullet.

Federal premium 165 grain psp boattail is my favorite. I hit one on the left shoulder and it exited the right rear leg at 200 yards. Plenty of weight to get the job done, the 180 grain bullets work fine but they're designed for heavier animals like elk. You want a bullet that'll transfer as much energy as possible and still hold together for adequate penetration.

I don't really have a favorite, but lately I have grown fond of Hornady 150gr Interbonds, and SST's. To be honest at those ranges pretty much any 30-06 bullet will quickly and cleanly kill a deer or hog.

I handload 165gr. Nosler Accubonds and use them on everything I hunt. I don't feel bonded bullets are needed for deer, but I like to stick with one load and stick with it.

RE: Favorite .30-06 deer/hog load?
I have been using the Remington Core Lokt bullet for the past two years. They are 180 grains and i havent had a deer go anymore than 75 yards since ive been using them. I dropped two deer last year at around 200 yards give or take a couple yards, and neither of those deer took another step. i highly encourage using the Remington Core Lokt bullet.

I'm not being a smarta$$ by saying this...but doesthe typebullet out of a 30-06 really matter when shooting a white-tail?
If you're shooting a moose or elk, the bullet is important...but on a deer that is 1/5 the size of a moose hunted with the same caliber I just don't see the importance of the bullet. Lots of guys shoot lots of deer with calibers starting as low as .22 and they are successful at it. The important thing about the bullet that you are shooting is that it hits where you want it to. I'm not belittling your post...just telling you to get a bullet that groups tighter than a frogs butt. |
