feeding deer= stupid

I bet you thought I was going to jump on people for feeding deer. Well in away I am. I took my dog out the other day for a drive, we live in the country and my dog loves going for rides in the car and looking at all the wild animals. When we left I told him I would try to find some deer, we did, right on the edge of the road. The deer would not move when I got closer I couldn' t figure out what was so important to them. Well we finally got to were they where and sure enough someone has been feeding them corn, right on the edge of the road. Another thing I live in upstate NY we have atleast 3 feet of snow on the ground and the deer are very hungry. It never stops to amaze me at how stupid some people can be. I really don' t have a problem with people feeding deer especially when the winter is as tough as this one. I am alittle p***ed when someone feeds the deer on the edge of the road.

that is reallly stupid, i dont mind people baiting them in the middle of the woods but not on the edge of the road, now thats just dumb. I know of somone that does that around here, and you can see dead deer all over the side of the road near where he does it. Some people have talked to the dnr about it but i guess they didnt do anything about it yet cause they keep doing it.

The only way that I " feed" deer is by making a food plot with rye grass and clover. I went hunting in Texas this past year with my father-in-law and they had feeders with corn. I don' t really consider that exciting. It really isn' t hunting. You don' t have to do any scouting or anything. All you have to do is put up a feeder and fill it long enough and the deer will come to it. It was like shooting pets. When the deer heard the feeder go off, they were oblivious to the fact that they were in danger of getting knocked off. I did shoot a doe for the meat, but this would not be the way that I want to get my wall hanger. It just didn' t seem like there was much effort to it.

Hawgs...exactly....LMAO!!!!!:D

Model722, that is stupid! Why would anybody feed deer on a road????? Is it possible a farmer spilled some seed while hauling to the bin???? I know this time of year, that happens a lot here....unsure if applicable to your situation.

Hawgs if he starts talking back you' ll know because I' ll be rich and famus:D
Skeeter 7MM I thought it might have been a mistake at first, but now that the pile seems to be there quite abit, I' m starting to wonder. I don' t have a vehicle at the moment or I' ld go down there and find out who it is. IMO I think some one saw the deer tracks and decided that would be a good place for them to feed the deer. There are no houses around so it would be hard to find out who is doing this. I just wonder if they' re going to get mad when they hit one of the deer they' re feeding.

If the pile is growing, it is intentional. Maybe a hunter getting rid of last years bait? But surely to god would think they know better than to do this. I guess if the snow is really high, maybe no choice.

Good luck on getting him to talk back:D

I completely agree. I love to get out and witness nature, but it isn' t good for deer to become that comfertable around humans.

I guess talking to a dog is better than a woman. They don' t talk back

Model 722, you may have the same problem there as we do here in Montana and in what I experience when I lived in British Columbia is that dureing the winter/spring months I have seen moose, elk, deer and sheep forageing after salt along the highways used to de-ice icey road conditions. I' ve had to blow my horn at sheep to get them out of my way because they were licking the salt, I guess kinda like a salt block and the game is learned from condtioning that it will be there at certain times of the year.
No sure if this is what your encountering but I sure hope it is, keep us posted.;)

121553 I' ve seen the deer licking at the side of the road before also, especially right after the sanders(salt) go through. I checked this spot out though it was definatlly corn, these deer were lovin it. It was probably the easiest meal they' ve had in a long time. I' m going to try and check it out this weekend I' ll let ya' all know what I find.

who doesnt talk to their dog?

LOL, I talk to my dog also, I talked to him this evening as he was trying to chase some calves away from the feed bunk, Needless to say that it did no good and the most of it is not fit to be repeated.

Just wanted to let ya know I went back and checked it out this weekend, it looks like who ever was feeding them stoped. My daughter told me there was a guy taking pictures of deer in that spot. I just wonder if he threw the food there to get the deer to come out for him. Still not a very smart idea, hopefully it won' t happen anymore.
My dog still isn' t answering back I ques I' ll have to go talk to the wifes cats:D

I' ve seen this done by people that think that deer can' t find food in the winter. Most will not even get out of thier cars/trucks to do it because of the snow. We even had one old lady that was pouring corn, oat mix right on the road because the plow didn' t push it off the berm. She was caught in the act and fined for this activity. Now get this... Her reason for doing it, her 7yr old grand daughter told her the reason the deer were there at the side of the road was, they where begging for food like the bears in the parks. We tried to get the radio stations to broadcast a public announcement about this pratice but they refused. Some people are clueless to the workings of nature. Well I guess it takes all kinds.

Food plot, salt lick, water hole, feeding corn. What do they have in common? They all attract deer so they are all the same no matter what you call them. If you hunt over them you can call it baiting but if you use these to improve deer conditions and hunt away from them I see no problem with them. Yes I use all the above to help improve the deer, bird conditions here on my lease.

Here in Tallahassee, we had a similar thing happen just out of town close to a friend' s house where I sometimes hunt. It seems, some guy was putting out about 50# of corn weekly next to the road about fiftenn feet off the road but outside of the trees.

We noticed the corn and thought maybe some of the local kids wnated to see deer. As it turns out, the guy was putting out corn so as to get a herd next to the road at night feeding and then he would ride by and shoot them. The only good part of that is he was shooting them for meat and was not just leaving them there.

I know there are easier ways to poach but I guess some people will try anything.
