Glad to see I am not the only one that may overhunt a stand and I surely appreciate the fact that it can a difficlut habit to break.
Some good points made.

I was also interested in comments made about being aware of the wind. To me, that is the most important
decision to consider when deciding where to set a stand.

I understand a lot has been written about scent control, etc but I honestly
feel that underestimating the deer's ability to smell you in the worst mistake a hunter can make.

I don't hunt out of a tree so I cannot comment on over hunting a stand, but I do tend to walk through the same areas I have taken deer in the past. I think it is natural to go back to the same spot that you had success with in the past.

I used to hunt NH. For all day hunts I would generally sit 2 or 3 stands for a couple hours each. These stands were on funnels mostly. The woods were big compared to Indiana where I am now. I would still-hunt my way between stands using the wind to plan the route. I did shoot several deer while still-hunting, but another benefit is the sign that you see. You will learn where the deer are moving/feeding, and where they are not. That lets you plan the next hunt, so youare always huntingthe best sign. It keeps you from hunting areas that deer are not using.

In Indiana, I hunt small woodlots. Even though they are small, it is helpful to have more than one stand, so you can select the one that works best for the wind on a given day. I'll hunt a stand say for the afternoon/evening and even if I don't see many deer I'll often return to it the next AM and sit until noon or even later depending. Then I'll change spots and do the same thingin the new location.I rotate between 3-4 stands. I think that method can be better than an all-day stand in one spot. I tend to be more attentive on stand if I get a short break at some point during the day. Also keeps the stands fresher.

If u have faith in the spot you are hunting, keep hunting it, i promise it will pay off. I have hunted a spot for a week and not seen anything decent, then the next time i harvested a huge 10 point that i hav never seen before, so i believe if u hunt in the same spot finally your dream buck will come to you.

I also tend to hunt your way during muzzle/rifle season and do a lot of scouting in between during the lull of the day. Good point.

I lived in Hollis and Brookline (west of Nashua) back in the late 80's early 90's. Hunted both towns as well.

I grew up 1/4 mile from J-Don's (Nashua/Hollis border) variety store.
I also partied a lot in those towns...
