In flighta 20ga is far superior to the 12ga. There is a reason that barrel makers will guarantee 200 yard accuracy with their 20ga barrels, but not the 12ga. Either will knock them just as dead as the next, but if you want to reach out farther than you should look at a 20ga.

I have a 12 & 20 H&R USH. For whitetailed deer, I would tell you to go with the 20 gauge. It's more than capable to kill deer at its effective range (120yd-150yd), wouldn't try anything past that, because there are to many variables that affect those heavy slugs (such as wind, temp., and humidity).

I shoot a Mossberg 500 12 Gauge, it'll kill any deer in the woods, but i am seriously thinking about switching to a 20 Gauge. Only problem is my 12 Gauge rifled slug barrel is completely camo so i might have a difficult time selling it if i decide to buy a 20 Gauge.

I started using a 20 ga last year, as my 12 gague was out of action. I had not hunted deer in a while, but the 20 ga did just fine taking down the deer I got last season. Either way, you should be ok.

Or you could be somewhat contrary like myself and go for a 16 gauge. My favorite weapon is my 16 gaugeRemington 870 Wingmaster, I love it. But to answer your question I have looked into getting a good slug gun and I have thought about getting a 20 gauge. When I was younger I hunted with a 20 gauge Wingmaster and never had any problems taking down deer with it. To me one well placed shot from either will do the job.

Another here for mossberg 500 in 12gauge. I actually hunt with it more than my rifles. I shoot the Hornaday SST Sabots out of it and getabout a 3in group at 100yrds. I have a ported barrel so it doesnt kick all that hard, but it will punch a nice big hole....I wish i would have sprung for a better slug gun seeing as how i use it more than anything else in my collection just due to local hunting restrictions.

If you want miss and wound a lot of deer, start shooting at them at 200 yards with a 20 guage.

Most people couldn't kill one 200 yards awayoff handwith a 30-06.

well, I shot my first deer with a 20ga went thru the heart and destroyed the opposite side shoulder. This was at 25yds. 2 3/4" As far as i'm concerned, the difference between 12 and 20 is how much recoil you are comfortable with. 12 is my choice because it's a great bird gun so i'd just switch the bbls and away you go
