The chaps would be the way I would go .

I use a pair of snake proof gaiters. The chaps make my entire leg sweat so bad I have to peel off my pants. The gaiters make me sweat but only half as much. Also about half the price. I think I paid about $40 for mine.

A number of good ideas. I like the gaiter idea but if I am going to be stomping through the thick stuff, their will be lots of briars so I need the chaps. I looked in Cabelas, they run $60 or so.

Red Ruger, it doesn't sound like you have used yours much, but do you have any comments on comfort or other "likes/dislikes"?

tealboy, in the last 30 or so years of buying timber and wearing chaps in N.W. Fl I have literally worn chaps while walking countless miles let me say they are a little hot in the summer, they are a little heavy, they will dry fairly quickly when wet, the best use for them in my opinion is the briar resistence they have. I have not been struck by a snake, that I know of, but one time and they worked. A pair will last me several years and I wear mine every week.

Any more comments? I have looked at a pair of Russell snake boots. They are very well constructed but also expensive. I like them but without the waterproof, they won't work for me. I like the Chippewa ok, but without the laces, I suspect they will rub my heel a lot.

The new Lacrosse were pretty nice too. Not as well made, but at $100, a pretty good value.

Any more comments?

tealboy to answer your question.Like I said I only have worn the chaps a couple of times. These are new and still quite stiff. So they aren't real comfortable. I'm sure they will loosen up with use. In the summer months when you need the protection the most they are very hot.I would rather be a little uncomfortable and be protected, then make a trip to the local hospital.I know very few die from snake bites ,but why take that chance.I need to start wearing mine.I have mine stored in my travel trailer(hunt camp)and never think about them. One day I might have wished I thought of them on the trip to the hospital......Ruger Redhawk

Agree with Timber,I've been useing snake chaps for over ten years(on second pair)blood trailing in the dark on a hot Oct.night would not trade them for anything.I've worn them to the stand and then taken them off when I go up.I get to hunt places others want dare go either due to briars or fear of snakes.
