Antlers still on deer

Sunday i went to our land to plant some food plots and while i was driving in the fields on the four-wheeler, i noticed that one of the deer in the herd still had both antlers on. it seemed to be a decent 8 pointer. I thought that was pretty strange.

I saw a nice 8 pt about 10 years ago still carry his head set at the end of April. Maybe some deer need the help of new antler growth to push the antlers off, kind of like a kid loosing his first toothe. Who knows, just my 2 cents.

It is strange, but oddly I have heard the same type of story here in Montana. A fellow I work with has been seeing a nice 8-pointer around his place and waiting for it to drop sheds. As of May 7th the buck was still carrying its rack.

Interesting .... In late march this year, during Alabama's spring turkey season, while attempting to roost turkey for the next day's morning hunt my buddy and I came across a fresh scrape line that was along the edge of a woods road. It was I'd guess about 1/3 - 1/2 mile long. There were 22 scrapes and 7 fresh looking rubs. Some of the scrapes were still wet with urine and rank as all get out !!! I raked leaves into several of the scrapes. I visited the scrape line three days later and it was still being worked. All of the scrapes that I had covered were clean and filled with pawings. I never saw the buck. This was the first time I had seen this late a "rut" sign in my 45+ years of hunting deer in the SE USA.

That's very interesting to find scrapes and rubs this late in the year. I've never seen anything like that here.
