Just hit a deer
I just hit a deer about half an hour ago. Never hit one before. It was a small buck. I thought it was a decent doe but turned out to be a buck. I actually ran it over but did not kill it and ended up backing up and parking and got out my knife (luckily I had it) and deflated both lungs so it wouldn't suffer anymore. I hated hitting it but there was literaly no way to stop.
Lukily for me I was in my CJ5 which is lifted with a goodsize bumper up front. No damage to the Jeep. I have a full freezer so I didn't take it. guess something will eat it. |

that always sucks

RE: Just hit a deer
I have hit 2, not a whole year apart. The first one was a grown doe on a dirt road when i was coming back from fishing (with the boat in tow)which bent my bumper bracket and grill guard(I hit her at 45mph). The second was a doe yearling coming back from fishing also- this one didnt damage my truck at all, I didnt hit the deer that hard. I slammed on brakes to miss the other 5-6 deer and the yearling must have been blinded and decided to run a little too late. She ran head-on into the tire which rolled over her, killing her instantly.
I love seeing so many deer in the woods, but our population is out of control around here[&:]. |
RE: Just hit a deer
well I got lucky her is a pic of the front of my jeep. Its lifted and pretty tall so the bumper took the hit and nocked him down and the tires rolled over his back half. I ended sticking my knife in both lungs (never cut ones throat and never will) to put it down for good. I've been known to stick an arrow in one that was hit. Had a police officer to tell me not to do that untill they arive...Guess I'll risk a ticket I won't let them suffer that long.

RE: Just hit a deer
that's too bad. nothing you can do though. haven't hit one yet..
I would have taken it! |
RE: Just hit a deer
Just glad all worked out well. Too bad for the deer, that does suck.
Last Fall I also hit my first deer. It was a young doe with 2 others and I just knocked her down hard while trying to stop. It was unavoidable. She got back up and swaggered back into the woods. I also checked that area later and found no evidence of her. Hopefully she survived but I can never be sure. |
RE: Just hit a deer
I've taken several hit by cars. But without a place to take it and without the freezer space i didn't have a place for it.

RE: Just hit a deer
I hit one 2 years ago on my way to the hntn club. It didnt kill it it just broke both back legs. Luckily my friend had left his 7mag. inthe back seat. And just before i shot it some guy pulled up that was more redneck than me, and wanted to "take it off my hands". I said no, and the truck had scared the deer from the road. using just its front legs it crawled about 15 yards into the woods. I made the other guy hold the light and i finally got a clear shot. It was a clean shot, took out both lungs. I took it back to the club and we got what meat we could, but the rest was beat up. Oh! I was in my friends Izuzu Rodeo.

RE: Just hit a deer
7mm mag will do it especialy at 15 yards. It was dark and I had no gun. I basiacaly broke this one down like you did. I usualy have a good size knife with me so I stuck it in both lungs and it was done real quick. Like I said I would have taken the meat if I had the room for it. Guess the coyotes, foxes, and buzzards have to eat too.

Its the original body (no rust) It came from out west. The drivetrain is a 304 V8 and a 3 Speed. Spring over axel lift (about 5 inches) 33 inch mud tires. Nothing to fancy. Needs a steering box now because of the tires. Its also ryno lined inside and underneath. |
RE: Just hit a deer
my sister's was with her friend hit a deer a few days ago. her friend is nervous around guns and loves animals (not the hunting type) hurt her car a little. broke the grill and a headlight. Unfortunately for her(my sister's friend) they watched a police officer put it down.

RE: Just hit a deer
Seif5034,
At least the police officer put it down and it didn't have to suffer any more. |
RE: Just hit a deer
I have never hit a deer and I hope I never do. That said, I just can't stand the idea of letting a whole bunch of free meat go to waste--even if that means giving it to the state and (hoping) they give it to the poor. Does anyone know the law in Washington state--could I just take it? I get the picture that when you hit a deer, you usually hit the hind quarter--which pretty much ruins that quarter and possibly the other. So that means you get the backstraps, the tenderloins (maybe)? You made a judgement call as to not having the space for the meat. Is there a % guess as to how much you lose of the gross weight?

RE: Just hit a deer
Well I ran him over. He was busted up really bad. I'd guess there wasn't much good left realy. I full out ran him over so his back half was no good for sure. The front wasn't much better. I'd guess him at around 100 feild dress weight of which you'd get maybe 40% on a non car hit deer. I'd guess you'd get far less than that on him. I realy doubt I could have got much. Plus the butcher I use is shut down after season. So I would have had to do it myself which would have been fine if I was setup for it. I would have probably taken him if I had the setup.
Check with your police or Department of natural resourses about taking one hit by a car in your state. Most places require police to give you a tag (deters people from poatching and calling them hit by a car) I'd guessyour state is similar. |
RE: Just hit a deer
The DNR here in Minnesota will take road kill to the butcher and put it on the food shelf for the needy if the person who hit it does not want it.
