VA--I have had some decent success finding deer bedding areas using GoogleEarth. In fact, I found probably what appears to be the best bedding area I have found in years using GoogleEarth a few months ago. Remember, bedding areas aren't always the "darkest" area on the map, but can be specific areas based on the surrounding contours, crop fields, etc. So I would say, GoogleEarth map study definitely can you a advantage when looking for bedding areas.

My best approach is from site like you mentioned an then get in there an do the foot work in the spring around turkey season when everyone else is in the woods. Put up some cameras an see what else you can learn. Put you some stands up an hunt them in the fall. I then do the same thing in the coming spring again if needed. I also walk that same areawith the rut in mind.
