Scope question
Which Scope would someone recommend for a .308 for Deer hunting.
|
RE: Scope question
I am partial to Leupold, middle of the road.
Can't justify the expensive ones, but they are awesome (Swar, Zeiss, etc.). Last few years the lower end companies have come a long way. Nikon and Bushnell are closer to the middle of the road, but not as expensive as Leupold. 2-7 power for thicker country. 3-9 for a good mix. 6-18 for long range You need to be more specific about how you hunt? |
RE: Scope question
On a standard rifle,like a Remington M700,a 3x9 Leupold or Burris.For asmaller rifle like the Model 7,a compact 2x7
|
RE: Scope question
Thanks guys !!!!!!
I hunt a good mix from woods to open country I hunt in Minnesota. |
RE: Scope question
It's really up to you, although I'd second the 2x& or 3x9 Leupold. I personally like the extra eye relief on a hunting rig when you have a thick jacket and a pack on. For my varmint rigs it really don't matter, I'm usually shooting from a prone position anyway.

RE: Scope question
leupold 3x9 VX-I... all the scope you need
|
RE: Scope question
In most cases the best value for your money is a 3x-9x variable. If you prefer a 2x-7x that's fine, but you pay slightly more $ for slightly less magnification. Still, if the 2x-7x fits better on your rifle then go for it.
If you get a variable, it doesn't matter so much whether you get a 2-7 or 3-9, but learn to place it on a given power and leave it there unless you absolutely find yourself in a situation needing it higher or lower. I've been going back to fixed powers on most of my favorite rifles, but even on my variablel I usually leave them dialed in to the middle power.... 6x on my 3-9's and around 4.5-5x on my 2-7's .... just so I have some up and down room should I feel I want a wider field of view for close quarters, or wanting to crank it up for a farther than usual shot. |
RE: Scope question
You can find the Bushnell 4200 Elite3x9x40 for about $250. Best buy in a scope out there. As good as or better than the Lupy V3.

RE: Scope question
not a red dot they suck
|
RE: Scope question
I got a 308 remmy 742. I have a 3x9 Swift. The optics are just as comparable to leupold but only for 1/3 of the price. I have had mine for about 10 yrs and this past season I couldnt get it to zero in I never did find out what the problem was but the swift company sent me a brand new scope about 10 days later.

RE: Scope question
Never had a bit of trouble with Bushnell. Have them on my muzzy, my 12 Ga. H&R and my 300 win mag. also have one for my 44 but don't use it. Spend your money the way you want, but for the average hunter you are not going to get alot of return buying one of the high dollar scope.
|
RE: Scope question
Definitely a personal preference question...I hunt just north of you in Manitoba and I'm sure that our temperature patterns are quite similar. I've never had a difficulty with Bushnell or Nikon in the cold weather. I would go for a 3x9x40mm scope which ever you buy. The better the lense you buy the better the light intake will be in low light conditions. If you have the bucks a Zeiss conquest is an excellent scope. What is your price range?
|
RE: Scope question
Price range is an important part of any recommendation. You do get what you pay for with optics. Here are my picks:
$200-Elite 32003-9 $300-Leupold VX-II 3-9 $400-Zeiss 3-9 or Leupold VX III 2.5-8 More money to spend, take your pick,I doubt you could go wrong. IMHO, the best combination of price and performance is the Leupold VX-II. Will |
RE: Scope question
Another vote for the Leupold Vari-X II or VX-II in 3x9. Currently I have six of them on an assortment of rifles some of which are long range guns. A few are almost 20 years old and I've never hada singleproblem with any of them.

ORIGINAL: Will_C Price range is an important part of any recommendation. You do get what you pay for with optics. IMHO, the best combination of price and performance is the Leupold VX-II. Will I have looked through scopes with equal clarity, some with justlitle bit more clarity (to my eye) but none that combine all the qualities along with the AMPLE EYE relief. That said, there are some that are close, to me anyway. |
RE: Scope question
ORIGINAL: timbercruiser You can find the Bushnell 4200 Elite3x9x40 for about $250. Best buy in a scope out there. As good as or better than the Lupy V3. |
RE: Scope question
I went with a Nikon Prostaff.. I have had Leopold, Baush and Lomb, and Zeiss and I took them all off and put Nikon on my guns.. For about 160.00 it has great eye relief and is very clear..
|
RE: Scope question
Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 !!!!!!
|
RE: Scope question
I have a 3x9x40 Nikon Monarch. In the northeast most deer are taken within 100 yards and I usually set the magnification toward the lower range, maybe 4.
|
RE: Scope question
2-7 or 3-9, probably 3-9 of the 2. 6-18 is way too much IMO for a .308, less you plan to do 1000yd shots competitions, someting near a 3-9 is perfect. whether its a 3.5-10 or 2.5-8
|
RE: Scope question
The Vx 111 or older Varixiii are great scopes, although you will pay more. Their clarity is awesome and there is a built in range estimator on them. I usually put the 2.5X8 on my guns. I always leave them on the lowest power. If Something comes up quick, I can find it in the scope due to the fact that the lower power has a wider field of view. If something is further away, I have the time necessary to crank up the power. You only have to jump a nice buck once when you have that scope cranked up before you learn that lesson!

RE: Scope question
I am rather late in the "advice" line, but here is another $.02. I have hunted white tail deer since I was a teenager in the early 1960's. Do not make the same mistake that I did and "buy up" to a good scope. Trust me, I spent enough $$$ and over 20 years of frustration getting here. I have several scopes right now ... from a $50 BSA "Cat Eye" to $300 Burris Fullfield to $500 Leupold Vari-X III's to $2000 +/- top of the line Swarovski and Carl Zeiss scopes ... and too many in between to list here. I say this only to let you know I do have some experience with a broad spectrum of scopes. Be that as it may, regardless of what you get, do yourself a favor and buy the best quality that you can afford. You'll be glad you did.
You want a suggestion - Zeiss Conquest. |
RE: Scope question
I'll second Mojo and most of the others here too! Get the best you can get!
I used to think that it was foolish to spend the extra money for a better scope. But I had 2 cheapies fail me, one of them on a on a hunt! My suggestions would be Burris, Nikon Monarch, Bushnell 3200 or 4200 or at least a VX-II Luepy. A Zeiss Conquest would be about as high as I'd go! I believe you really get what you pay for in scopes but, I also believe that you reach a point of "diminishing returns" once you get into the Luepy VX-III price range! Good luck! |
