Smoking or dipping while hunting?
 

I try to do neither, but the last few shots I have had on a deer were either while standing at creek relieving myself and having a smoke, or smoking the occasional cig in my stand.

Whats your opinion?

I know plenty of people that smoke on the stand and are very successful doing so...it just depends on the direction of the wind...one guy hunts a certain food plot and if the wind isnt blowing in a certain direction he just doesnt go huntin...but when he does go he usually kills or at least sees deer

I'm no anti-smoker guy (used to smoke), but I know they can smell it, either while smoking or on the clothing itself. I just wouldn't risk a deer over it. As to dipping, I think a guy could use an empty soda bottle or something just to make sure there's no chance of your "Wintergreen" or whatever messing up your hunting spot. Thatsjust my opinion.

I've had deer stand under my tree and lick my spit pile and i have also shot deer while chewing it deosn't seem to bother them. I also make sure that i chew while i am scouting so they get used to the scent.

I don't smoke or dip but i try and be as scent free as possiable. I don't know if it's affects the deer but i wouldn't take the chance.

I wouldnt do either just incase. I even refrain from eating certain foods that have stronger scents than others.

Dont get me wrong. I shower with eliminator and cover well. Im very careful about my scent wearing about 3-5 scent wafers. I shot a 6 point, 10 year old buck this year at 20 feet smoking a cig and peeing in a creek. I guess you just have to be in the right place.

Ive heard of people smoking out their hunt clothes with campfire smoke. I never leave a butt in the woods though.

while im not sure the accuracy of this is dealing with cancer sticks, deer are curious creatures by nature so they may be drawn in out of curiosity....again, some scents may be too strong though

when i use to smoke i killed deer. now i don't smoke and i still kill deer. one things for sure, cigarette smoke sure don't attract deer but it is still possible to be a smoker and sucessful hunter.

I'm guilty of doing the dipping thing while hunting. I'm sure it doesn't help the situation!

Here's a good one...
My buddy goes hunting opening morning, about ten years back. He get's into his stand before light and while he's sitting he get's intestinal gridlock!
Climbing down quickly he power walks with his butt checks clinched together to find a safe spot to discharge... About 60 yards from his tree stand.
Now my buddy has gotten quite a few more deer than me to this point, so this frustrates me a bit.
Climbs back into his stand and an hour latter arrows a fine 6 point in velvet.
So every archery eve (Sept 15th - NH archery season), I call him up and sing him Tammy Wynettes "Sh-t bye your stand"!!!

shot my buck this year with a dip in my mouth but nothin like huntin the rut or pre rut and a lone doe starin right at u and a mouth full of juice fighting its way out the corners of your mouth but u dont want 2 move a muscle 2 keep from spooking her i dont think its effescts u got a cousin that swears by dippin apple skoal while huntin a 13 pt buck was havested inches from his spit pile the next morin deer was smellin it

If you have to question it you probably shouldn't do it. I don't do either.

I always have a chew in while hunting I dont see where its hurt me yet. I always take it out about a hour before dark just 2 refrain from the extra movement. I dont carry a spit bottle either just spit on the ground. Hasn't hurt me yet to my knowledge.

i hate to do it but i have to dip too. just me personally, i CAN'T go from before it gets light till after dark when i come down without feelin that sweet addiction in my lip. i spit on the ground last year all morning on an either sex rifle hunt and a doe walked RIGHT under my tree and never even acted alarmed when she walked past a quite large spit pile. . .BB

this is kind of like common sense, ok deer smell 40 times better than humans and i can smell cigarette smoke from 20 yards away so 20x40= :eek:carry the one:eek:um it equals a lot;););)

i dip griz mint and spit on the ground, it doesnt affect the deer in my area they have come up and smelled it and walked away like it was nothing

GUILTY for smokin.. ONLY when im up in the tree stand.. not on the ground.. 16 feet up.. not saying that makes much of a difference.. and depends on the wind.. this past season.. i had put a cigarett out, and 10 min later popped a button buck (thought to be a doe)
Two days later.. had a really noisy wrapper granolla bar.. couldnt help it.. damn thing wouldnt open cuz my fingers were frozen.. and i was so upset i made so much noise.. so i finish the granola bar.. lit a cig @ 8:02 sharp and @ 8:05 with cig in lip walks a monster 4 pointer.. i mean MONSTER size body.. as if he traveled from way up Canada or something.. looked like he escaped Saratoga Springs Raceway (horse Race) anyway.. the smoke was getting into my eyes when i had the cig in my mouth putting the X on the Buck, but.. got a clean heart shot.. @ 95 yards.. through thick trees n shrubs.
hopefully i'll have quit this dirty habbit by this upcomming season.. ive cut down to 3 cigs a day from 3/4 pack a day.

I DIP WHEN I HUNT AND GOT NO PROBLEM WITH IT...WELL I TAKE THAT BACK I DIP IN SCHOOL TO SO NO BIG

For the first deer I ever shot, I had to quickly step on my cig and shoulder my shotgun. Prob depends on the wind..

Last year I did smoke throughout the days, but not in my stand. I always went to the same spot to smoke in a poor attempt to preserve my stands ninja secrecy. Whenever I finish a cigarette, I field strip it to put the cherry out and then put my butts in a plastic bag. Coming back from my stand to smoke a cigarette one day, a doe was standing in my smoking spot, licking the ground. Could be something to it, they sure are curious creatures.
