aging deer with naked eye
i have seen several threads involving "guestimating scores of racks" which has become enjoyable for me.
in those threads some guys will state their guess on the age of the buck. what are you guys looking for when you "age" a deer with the naked eye? |
RE: aging deer with naked eye
Body size, overall apearence and way they walk/move,depth of chest, age of face, mass/ spread and length/score, and general potential of each age class to produce a given rack/score. All those factors and more including experience of seein alot of bucks and watching them grow over the years give you a pretty good guesstimation as to what age they are. However region and food need to be taken into acount too. I could never acturatly agea deer from texas nor could the average texan age a deer accuratly in WI without getting some experience first hand with the deer over some years.A deer in texas at5 1/2years old could look like a 3 1/2 WI buck so knowing your situations and deer potential for the region in which thedeer are in is very important to aging as well. WCL
I would guess that buck in your avatar to be about 4 1/2 I supose but its hard to tell from that pic. Potentially 3 1/2with excellent nutrition. WCL |

RE: aging deer with naked eye
Theres a science to it, but you can definitely tell an older buck when you see one. The problem is you just don't get to see them often enough. Mostly due to the fact that A) we shoot most of them before they get above 3 1/2 years old. B) because when they get above that age they are very elusive and nocturnal.

RE: aging deer with naked eye
I have been useing my game cam to study the deer we keep feeding here in the great white north, have collected more than 100 pics and vids. When you watch 6 deer feeding it is very easy to see the difference in size and age. None have a rack now, but this fall will tell me who had droped the half rack with 6 pts with 7" around the base. I see him often with another large one, I like to think of it being him and her, this fall's trophy.
