RE: Hunting teachers
My dad didn't hunt much but he did teach me how to shoot. We went squirrel hunting twice but that's about it. When I was 16 he saw that I had a real passion to deer hunt and he found a man at our church would put a rifle in my hand a my butt in a stand. Mr. Jimmywood tought me a lot those first two seasons. After that I had my own rifle and another man from my church took me and proceded to make me the hunter I am today.

Tagged along with my dad to deer, dove hunt and fish. With my uncle to quail and duck hunt, and my father-in-law to run deer dogs. I mostly just still hunt now when i cant run deer dogs during boww and muzzleloader seasons.

RE: Hunting teachers
My Uncle (My Mom's Brother)got both My Dad and I started. My Mom's family owns a couple hundred acres in South Texas and we would spend the weekends out there hunting Dove, quail and othersmall game.. My Dad spent alot of money to put electricity and a camp house out there. After my Parents divorced, my mom's family really couldn't afford to keep the place up and I spent most of my time hunting with my Dad on leased land.. Now that he is gone. My Uncle and I are starting to plan some trips together. I just wish I was closer to Tx to use the land more.

RE: Hunting teachers
I learned to properly handle firearms from my father. I have learned a fair amount about hunting from my niece's husband who has been generous in letting me hunt deer and ducks on some private lands he has access to. Importantly, he showed me how to skin and quarter a deer. Importantly, I have learned one way of duck hunting by going on about 16 duck hunting sessions with him over several years. At the same time, I have read a lot of books and thought about hunting to learn things that I haven't been taught. Still, it is a big help to have someone teach you or show you the rock-bottom basics, in my opinion. Once you have a basic foundation, even if simple, it is pretty easy to build and improve from their. I wish I had such a teacher in the are of elk hunting. I did a solo DIY elk hunt in 2006 and felt like I was not quite getting it, that I was more "walking in the woods while carrying a rifle" than hunting.

RE: Hunting teachers
My step-dad took me rabbit huntin' which I didn't think was much of a big deal until ... we were walkin' along and two rabbits jumped at the same time and he blasted both of them with a single-shot shotgun.
Much later in life, a new-found friend took me deer huntin'. I was so excited I was willing to go, even without a weapon. I've never been the same since ... Side note: I married a beautiful woman 17 years ago and she had an eight year old boy. I used to have to drag him to go deer huntin'. She asked me to take and teach him to play soccer. Soccer? What the heck is that? Long story short ... out of 15 to 20 close huntin' buddies, the kid would be the first one to score year after year with his bow. He eventually signed up for the Army and became a sniper in the Infantry in Iraq ... He's home now and still kickin' butt with his rifle ... Soccer anyone? |
