We almost stepped on this antler.....
My shed hunting buddy (pictured here) and I almost stepped on this antler last spring. We felt pretty foolish and lucky. It was lying in the middle of a pasture meadow, only 100 or so yards from a trail. It scores 89 inches. This would be a 200 + non-typical deer if he had any kind of matching side.

RE: We almost stepped on this antler.....
This may be a stupid sounding question but being a rookie and all I beg for your forgiveness. Is it rare to find a matching set of sheds in close proximity? <img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: We almost stepped on this antler.....
Carpie, yes and no. It seems that finding a set of ok or even decent sheds close is easier, then the hawgs...really not sure why but that adds to the allure. We have found most sets of big horn on food sources, especially out near old grain bins, that may actually knock them off when they feed. This is why guys use antler trap style feeders to try and collect horns easier. I remember 2 springs ago finding a set of 180 sheds within 75 yards of each other and as plain as day, yet that same year we searched high & low for a matcher on a huge non-typie shed and never did find the right side. Usually if you can find a winter food source they are keying on and walk the trails to bed, you'll find the match but it ain't always easy or close. It truly is every bit as hard or challenging as the actual hunt.
Saskbucks, you find any from this year yet? I have found some smaller ones and buddy found a 150 set yesterday in some bails. They seem a little late this year, last week we found a hot and heavy hay field, a number of bucks still were wearing the gear???? |
RE: We almost stepped on this antler.....
Carpie it can be very hard to find a matching set of shed antlers in the same area.
Saskbucks Its to bad you didn't get the deer that belongs to that shed.(nice shed) |
RE: We almost stepped on this antler.....
That is Nice! Imagine him next season! whoo-hoo! peace

RE: We almost stepped on this antler.....
Thanks for replying. Carpie, we seem to find the larger antlers a little easier to double up on the match. Although it can be tough, depending on the terrain. Last spring we found the matches to a few different antlers less than a hundred yards away from the originals.
Skeeter, we have only been out a couple times and have only found a small 4 pt. A friend of mine that lives up past North Battleford is up to 18 now. He has time to look everyday. He has 8 that are over 70 inches!!!! Now that is some awesome bone. Shedmanpyro, I like your thoughts. My buddy and I exclusively walk around for sheds, no quads or ski-doos. We wish the market would fall out so there wouldn't be so many guys after them. We cherish the walk and the fresh air. I feel it is an addiction. It's a shame to find a skull. I like to be able to think that the owners are still walking around and bigger than ever. By the way where are you from and how old are your boys??? I have a 5 month old and can't wait to get him in the outdoors. I know it will be a few years. Be a steward of the outdoors. Help to keep our heritage. |

RE: We almost stepped on this antler.....
Shedmanpro, he was wishing that Sheds weren' t such a big market and money maker. Many areas I used to shed hunt would only see my boots tracks during the winter, now they look like a highway. Most of those guys are looking to sell not collect. Big business= big competition and big dollars. Really is to bad that some don' t get the real joy out of finding a set of shed. Obviously I am with you on the " wouldn' t dream of selling my treasures" , but many see dollar signs and jump!!!!
BTW, good thin you never parted with your set of 170' s, that guy would be getting a heck of a deal. Good luck finding your yards and horns. Hope you get to fullfil your dream one day...but you really should try coming and getting one when they are still on their heads...that' s pretty fun too. Bring the boys! |
RE: We almost stepped on this antler.....
I would really like to see the buck that came from. Thanks for sharing.

RE: We almost stepped on this antler.....
Wow! Now that is impressive. It looks like a large branch off of a tree. :)

RE: We almost stepped on this antler.....
Nice shed there SB! If I can find it I' ll post one my brother found in MD a few years back. He told me he had it scored and it was 106 and some change non-typical. There' s 14 points on this shed but as you can see the mice got to some of the points.

RE: We almost stepped on this antler.....
Wow, that is a fantastic shed!! Points coming out of everywhere. Thanks for sharing.
Skeeter, did you put your pic in the " putting a face to the name" posting? |
RE: We almost stepped on this antler.....
SaskBucks-Great looking shed!! Don' t feel bad about almost stepping on it.My biggest shed last year I was a few feet away from stepping on and a big elk shed upsate Pa the same way.The elk shed was a 7pt. that was 46" long and weighed 11lbs.:D Congrats!!
Carpie-I' ve found most of my sets within feet of each other then others that were over a 1/2 mile apart. You never know where they' re going to drop. My personal count shows I find a set for about every 10 sheds I find. One of my sets I actually saw fall off the deer.It was a small 6 pointer, when he took off running one side popped off then about 100 yds.away the other side popped off.You never know!!! MK-M-GOBL-that is still my no.#1 shed:D I found a guy that would restore the chews, but that means I' d have to trust it to our postal service.NOT. |
RE: We almost stepped on this antler.....
i am with probably everybody on this message board. i look every spring for them sheds and i spend about an hour per shed, but there is no way i would ever sell a shed for any amount of money
