All this hype about camo.
Is it just me, or is the market for camoflauge just ridiculous? All these big name outfitters are constantly on TV killing 185 + B&C deer and they always squeeze in the brief advertisement about their camo. Is it just that the rich people who can afford this stuff keep buying it like its going out of style? I went to bass pro the other day and looked around. Jackets on average were around $80. Now, heres my point.
We see them advertise on tv and kill big deer while wearing it. Does that make some of us believe that if we buy the hi-tech stuff we will be as sucessful as the "pros"??? Growing up in not the most wealthy family, my daddy gave me grandads ol army bdu's etc to wear when we went hunting. We still wear the cheap ol' fashioned stuff to this day. Sometimes I evenwear jean overalls with a flannel shirt under and am regularly sucessful. Papaw wears a SOLID ORANGE, bright as the sun coverall set. He killed two 190 +lb. deer this season. With that, I say that people are seriously getting torn a new one buying into the high dollar clothes of today. Just trying to get a discussion going and outside views. |
RE: All this hype about camo.
i would say that a lot of it is marketing.....but i do like to have a good camo pattern to break my image up
|
RE: All this hype about camo.
They are all just trying to make the almighty dollar. I personally have just about stopped buying camo because of all these ads telling folks they have to have the latest to be successfull. And we all KNOW that last seasons camo clothes are now outdated and how can anyone be a big buck killer without the latest pattern.

RE: All this hype about camo.
While the marketing for the different color blends is nice to look at the well made products that are also warm, lighter weight, and more comfortable are a big plus.

RE: All this hype about camo.
$80 ? everything I see is like $200-300 occasionally I'll see a tshirt priced right.

Camo isn't the onlykey to break up the BLOB effect. In saskatchewan camo is not allowed during rifle season (up until this past season it was a full suit requirement but now pants can be whatever floats your canoe) it never effected my success rate any. First and foremost regardless of what season or outfit my priority list is as follows:
#1 wind (keep it on yours and off theirs) #2location (no skylining - make sure you have backing so your outiline is not against the horizon. Best camo is still the stuff god made, look for it and use it.) #3 movement (watch your gross movements -pan with your eyes, situate yourself with the best field of view to minimize movement requirements, etc) #4 noise ( if it walks andact like a human it must be a human - slow down, stop, listen, look) #5 prepared/ready (rangemarkers prior to the animals showing up,have your equipment nearby/handy without having to search or move a ton, be alert/attentive, etc) Adding camo won't hurt. Personally just like decoying geese i think animals see our faces as a beacon, many timesbefore they see anything else! I like to tone mine down with a face mask be it mesh or up here in the cold weather a polyproplene face mask.Or I look down and basically through the beak of my hat when faced with a stare down. Most of the staring contestsI have encountered have resulted awaving bye bye so I try to avoid such contests.;) |

Corporate America my friend, if there's a dollar to be made, someone will find a way to make it.
It is marketing at it's finest. Let's not forget that we buy new vehicles, snowmobiles, ATV, etc... and the list goes on... What ever we are replacing is not the "latest technology", is how it's sold, got to have the latest and greatest. Heck there are still a lot of 80's and 90's pick-up trucks around that still work fine. Have you bought a new one lately? Another example is I have a friend that hunts with a 1982 Hoyt compound bow and has killed more deer than me, with my fancy Matthews bow that shots around 240'/sec. The old Hoyt shots 172"/sec. If it ain't broke don't fix it! |
RE: All this hype about camo.
I love camo, I have camo drawers on right now !
|
RE: All this hype about camo.
I cant even start to tell you how many bucks my dad has killed in flannel shirts and BDUs. I am guilty because i still like to have a good camo pattern to bowhunt- mossy oak preferably

RE: All this hype about camo.
I vote we bring plaid back in style,it'sgreat camo:). Yard sales and the after season sales is all we poor folk have.

RE: All this hype about camo.
Camo is made to fool hunters not deer. I like camo, and, as said earlier, buy mine from the clearance rack. I'm not so hung up on the camo as I am the material (lightweight for hot weather, fleece for cold weather). I can usually find those materials in camo more readily and cheaper than I can in non-camo.

RE: All this hype about camo.
I don't see it out hear where I live..
Not yet anyway..... Everybody I hunt with, are in sweat pants....:D I'm a true believer in camofluoging myself....... But being comfortable will make or break your hunt.. Thats where I put my money at....... You just have to be smartabout the product you purchase.. I normally wear a como bandana and break up my face with a little colour in warm weather, in cold I'll wear a camo bellacalva.. But as far as clothing, alot of camo material is noisy, alot of it is bulky and heavy, some is too thin (its gonna rip). I use as much merino wool to keep noise levels down to a min.Doesn't neccessarly have to be camo, alot of earth tone colours will work for me as well.. |
RE: All this hype about camo.
Another Very Good Post Discussion!
I been thinking a lot about this lately. I have been feeding Deer and Turkeys 15-20 Yards from my house. I park my Truck within 10 yards of where they eat. They are under a Dusk to Dawn light. I love watching them eat. My wife get so mad at them the wat they treat each other:D My point is that I put the Corn out and they found it soon. My Truck was there. So I turned it around the Deer and Turkeys still came. So one day I had a Trailer on and I backed it right where the Truck sets. They acted like they never even seen it. So my conclusion is that movement is the Key. Along with Human Sent. I think they both Tie with being # ONE! If you move and he see's you? He's Gone! If he Smells you? and you don't move, He's still Gone! I think you could be wearing a Orange Tux and score. Just my 2 cents! TF |
RE: All this hype about camo.
I just buy new camo that fits my environment when my old camo fades. Like MOhunter46 said, you don't want to be sticking out when that booner is 15 yds. from the base of your tree. I agree that it over commercialized, but if I were smart enough to make a million off a new camo pattern, I would and so would you.
|
RE: All this hype about camo.
i agree with what most everyone has been saying, a lot of the camo out there is probably just a marketing ploy. HoWeVER, i also agree that you want to do all that you can in order to blend in with your environment so that you will not stick out like a sore thumb when in the woods. I've gotta admit, Realtree AP is my guilty pleasure when it comes to camo:Dbill jordan and his marketing "ploys" definitely hooked me with that pattern!!

To GregH....Isn't that Trebark the original (1st) camo pattern made? I never see that pattern being sold anymore.
|
RE: All this hype about camo.
It is Tree Bark and they have come out with it again. Mine is over 20 years old. I'm using a new pattern now called Ultimate Camo, it is made by a guy right here on this site, his name is Diesel77. Look it up, it's the ultimate in camo that looks like bark.

RE: All this hype about camo.
Greg, youre my hero. Im guiltyof beingacamo junkie. I own about every pattern out there as well as designing my own patterns. All camo patterns will work better than others in certain situations. There is no perfect pattern for all deer hunting situations. Being a bowhunter, I get to hunt from Sept to the end of January and wanted a pattern that worked all season. And I wanted a pattern that wasnt trying appear as a 3 dimentional picture of leaves, grass, branches, barkand absrtact images and blobs on the fabric. Im hunting againts bark, I want it to look like bark, plain and simple. This pattern just takes the detail to another level for those up close and personal encounters. Take your favorite pattern and tie the arms around a tree from a stand or on the ground, and go walk back 20 or 30 yards and take a picture of it with nothing between you and the picture. If you really want to see how it looks to deer against a tree trunk or up in a stand, convertthe pictureto a sepia tone. Deer see in dichromatic vision so color isnt as important as matching your background which is where this pattern really works if your hunting from a stand. Movement and scent will get you busted just as much if not more than being picked out because of your camo. Its after being busted by movement where our pattern will get you a better chance at being able to get a shot off, if you get seen at all. We hunted in the pattern for2 years before actually selling the camo, and tested our pattern with many other patterns, purposely moving to see what reaction deer have after they see us. Its easy and obvious to know what Im gong to say of course, but its the truth. With most other patterns, we found the deer would see us, recognize there was something in the tree that didnt look right, do the foot stompand either trot off the opposite direction or just haul %$#. With our pattern, we founda much much better chance at the deer eventually continuing with feeding, or whatever it was they were doing after taking a good look for a few seconds. When they see the bark texture in a tree it just seems to make them less nervous. The cool thing with our pattern, is in direct sunlight the pattern picks up all the silvers, grays and light colors just like real bark does. In shade, canopy or low ligh conditions it turns darker just like real bark but does not blob even at dusk. This is not the end all beat all pattern, but for "certain" tree stand and turkey situations its tough to beat.

RE: All this hype about camo.
DIESEL! THATS THE STUFF!!!!! I've been looking for that pattern for years since my original Trebark seen it's last day (RIP). It's the vertical in it I think is key! I'll look your product up!

RE: All this hype about camo.
Looks good diesel. Kind of reminds me of the Timber Ghost pattern (i think that was it) that was around about 9-10 years ago. Might consider it for those days i'm in the stand.

Yeah I haven't seen the Timber Ghost pattern in years, but if I recall it was on the same quality level as all the other patterns at that time...your's seems to be more photo-realistic.

RE: All this hype about camo.
Anybody notice that in Cabela's catalog and in Field and Stream, etc when you see a picture of a guy decked out in the latest camo next to his deer, elk, bear etc the guide next to him is usually wearing jeans, a Carhart jacket and a cowboy hat? I've been pondering this one.
|
RE: All this hype about camo.
I use TreeBark as well. It seems to be pretty effective. Plus, Dr. Leonard Lee Rue III said that it was also his personal prefernce, and well, you just cant argue with arguably the most knowledgeable deer hunter/photographer/writer/observer out there.
|
RE: All this hype about camo.
i think it's mostly a load of...well, you know. but i think they have certain points that are decent. the UV thing i might believe but this is easily corrected ($10) and as far as 3-D camo goes, you can just as easily buy some camo fabric, cut it up, and sew it on yourself. it's soo much cheaper that way
|
RE: All this hype about camo.
It's a lot easier to kill a trophy class buck when it's staring at you wondering when you're going to pet it. Nearly all of the so called "hunting shows" these days are taped at pic n' shoots , in that scenario any camo will do, although these might grant a slight advantage:

RE: All this hype about camo.
Hi guys! On this camo discussion here's my take.I've taken 3 trips out west for various game animals, and here I was ALL dressed up in camo, and my guide standing next to me was wearing a pair of bluejeans and a carhart jacket with deer skin gloves and a cowboy hat. Go figure ! And here I am wondering just which one of us spooked that greatbuck off !!
