RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
Visitor,I always thought it was almost the
opposite it let the other deer know danger was near like they call it a flag. |
RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
I have always heard that it is a warning sign for other deer. You know, the same thing as when a doe snorts. I guess that if a deer sees a predator and snorts, but the other deer to hear, they see the whitetail up and they know to get the heck out of there.
Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet P.S. Only Chuck Adams can sit at home and see deer so get into the woods. =;^) |
RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
Like everyone else said, its a warning sign.

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
I've heard it's also so the fawns could follow the mother. <img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
It's telling all the other deer to
"get outta Dodge"! Pablo |
RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
Whitetail deer comunicate with there tails, tail straight up means "danger"

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
Related question, is it true that the flag always drops when a deer is hit, I've taken deer but I guess the fever was too strong to concentrate on this detail. I've been told that if you see the flag drop you have definately hit the deer and should keep looking even if you don't find blood or hair.

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
tschaef I have heard that was true also, I can tell you I had my first clean miss this year and his flag was riding high as he took off! I checked for hair and blood and found neither, what I did find was two 1/4 inch saplings cut by the bullet about 10 yards in front of where he was standing when I shot. The property owners dog that is a bird dog trained to hunt deer came at the sound of the shot and with her help I tracked the deer for about 300 yards and never found hair nor blood, just tracks of a perfectly healthy deer hauling booty. I have never had a deer go any distance after being hit so I do not know if they hold thier tail down after getting hit or not.

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
Just from watching them I would say its a sign of danger. We can't shoot them so watch is all we do with whitetails.

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
A flag tells the other deer danger is near. Most of the time the does make a blowing noise when spooked also.
|
RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
It means "get the heck out of here".
|
RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
Another reason for the big white flag is to let you know you screwed up, see you later.Well maybe not.Been there done that.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
The whitetail flagging in the breeze is to "wave bye-bye, you screwed up!"
Actually it is a communication of danger to the other deer! |
RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
I know it is a signal for danger, but I aleays imagine them, saying "kiss my white butt buddy" as they haul butt for the next county!!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
I think as a general rule people say that a hit deer will have its tail down. I watched a deer walk by me during gun season, and I let him go as he was walking right to a field my friend was hunting (I had a buck, he did not) so I was watching, and sure enough BOOM, Matt shoots, I see the deer's tail flying high! I waited, he came and got me, he hit it, it was dead about 50 yds from the shot. So they can have their tails stright up. To give you an idea, he hit the ground HARD about 10 yds from where I saw his tail up, struggled up and another 15 yds and that was it.

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
I have to agree with you Dan B cause every time I see that tail raised up there hauling but in the oppiste direction.

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
Danger or warning sign to other deer in the area. I jumped one the other day while walking my dog. It was in this tall grass and I never saw her until she raised that tail and started bounding.

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
Well I was watching a hunting show yesterday and saw several deer shot, I payed attention to the tail, and everyone that I saw on the shows that went any distance did not throw their tail up, I am not saying that this happens every time, but from what I saw every one that was hit kept thier tail down.

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
I agree, they put their tails down when hit most of the time. BUT, I have seen them tail up after a good hit, so its not the only indication. I don't want someone to say, "well his tail was up in the air so I missed" and not do a thurough search cause 10 yds from where I saw him tail up there was a bunch of blood from where he hit the ground.

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
I'd agree because I've shot many, many deer that rsan with their tail up for 100yds and fell over dead. It's not a reliable indicator, although, if the tail is down, it's probably a hit.

RE: Why do whitetails. . . ?
I always thought it was to warn other deer but the science channel had an interesting different opinion. They said it's a signal to predators. It tells them that I know you're there, I'm faster than you, so don't bother wasting your energy (or mine)chasing me. They showed a deer being stalked by a wolverine and he gave up right after the white flag.
