opposite it let the other deer know danger was near like they call it a flag.

I have always heard that it is a warning sign for other deer. You know, the same thing as when a doe snorts. I guess that if a deer sees a predator and snorts, but the other deer to hear, they see the whitetail up and they know to get the heck out of there.

Related question, is it true that the flag always drops when a deer is hit, I've taken deer but I guess the fever was too strong to concentrate on this detail. I've been told that if you see the flag drop you have definately hit the deer and should keep looking even if you don't find blood or hair.

tschaef I have heard that was true also, I can tell you I had my first clean miss this year and his flag was riding high as he took off! I checked for hair and blood and found neither, what I did find was two 1/4 inch saplings cut by the bullet about 10 yards in front of where he was standing when I shot. The property owners dog that is a bird dog trained to hunt deer came at the sound of the shot and with her help I tracked the deer for about 300 yards and never found hair nor blood, just tracks of a perfectly healthy deer hauling booty. I have never had a deer go any distance after being hit so I do not know if they hold thier tail down after getting hit or not.
