Although popular the 308 is a bit under rated in my opinion. Several of my hunting buddies don't like it not because of the balistics but because they don't like the look of the short cartriage.

I think that the problem is people think "big bullet big boom" and the short action thing is for sissies.

On the other thing I have friends that swear by the 308 and say its a deer killing machine. I personally have never shot a 308 but love it and all its offspring.

Its one of the most popular cartridges ever! How's that under rated?

Its gotta be in the top 5 if not the top 3! Its almost good as a 30-06 or 270!

I would say it is underrated compared to the 270 & 30/06. My dad has killed 130+ bucks with a 308 in his hunting career and i have killed 15-16 bucks with a 308 myself. I would say the numbers speak for themselves

I can't remeber the last one i have had to bloodtrail either.... it is a deer killing caliber for sure-

Ballistics are really close to the 30-06, as far as speed and energy. Shoots about the same from what I can see. I’ve never heard anything but good things about it, so I can’t say it is underrated. But if it is, it shouldn’t be, which I guess goes with out saying… come to think of it, that may even be the definition of “underrated”… Must get more beer…

I have a.308 that has been a family guns for years and years. It has put many deer down over the years!!!

I agree with hoss, one of the most popular cartriges ever. Clearly NOT underrated. It is my favorite centerfire caliber. I like it because of its efficiency: it delivers excellent ballistic performance in relationship to its recoil and report, especially when compared to 30-06 and .270.

Ditto. One of the most popular cartridges of all time. The most popular short action hunting cartridge, and the father of the .243, .260, 7mm-08, .338 Fed. and .358. How on Earth could anyone consider it "underrated"?

When i called it underrated I was talking from my own experience. I know3 guys that hunt with one, and many more that can't stand them. On the other handout of those15 or so close friends that hunt and8 use a 30-06. I believe the 308 is one of the best cartriages of all time but in my group it is underrated among my peers.
