POTENTIAL

This is what I believe to be a 2 1/2 year old deer on my farm in Ohio, do you folks think that this deer has some future potential.

I think so. Looking at the body size (what you can see of it) it would almost lead me on to believe that he is 1.5 yr. old? Just an uneducated guess. But he has great length and height and I'd love to see him in a couple years. On a negative/nitpicking note, he's bea lot nicer if he had 3 on his left main beam as well. But who am I to complain 'bout an awesome young buck!

I do not intend to harvest this guy, just trying to set up a decent management program for the future. I seem to have a number young bucks w/ more points and the same age. Just wanted to see what you folks thought. Thanks for the replies.

Because you mentioned "management program" I would suggest taking him out of the gene pool based on the fact that he is a 7 pointer. But I dont know what your management goals are.

RE: POTENTIAL

My management goal is to get as much age on the deer on my property. If that is a 4 or 5 year old 7 or a 4 or 5 year old 10 it does not matter. I am not looking at scores, just mature deer to hunt. Although scores are nice, they are not my top priority.

Do you guys seem to see more bucks during late season or different bucks.

RE: POTENTIAL

I wouldn't rule out that being a 1.5. Hard to estimate potential based on one snapshot, but as far as antler score, the 7 points is a big negative. Even if he tops out as a 9 point, hurts the score. Good tine length, kind of hard to predict how the beam length and spread will develop.
